I was at american classic website and they have a VIN checker I have a 64 chevy truck and a title for a 64 chevy truck but when I ran the VIN it said it was a 66 I also notice in a LMC book they say that back up lights were added in 66 and my supposed to be 64 has back up lights. Anybody know anything about this or a better place to check the vin numbers? Kinda wondering if I have a 230 or 250 6 cyl now everything I read says 64 didn't have 250 any help or comments are appreciated.

VIN has an official meaning that started after the '60 so most likely you are talking about a serial number.

Do the numbers on the truck and title match? Could you have a '66 truck and a '64 title?

64 VIN number will be on upper part of door frame. 66 will be on top dead center of door frame. All 60-66 frames had a portion of the VIN stamped in them next to the drivers side motor mounts.

Well the thing is the title is where I'm getting the Vin # from and when I checked that number it says its a 66 but the title says 64 see why I'm confused.

no point in wondering over paperwork, look at the truck and it'll tell you what it is

if you check the truck itself and find the same numbers as on the title, you can remain confused and find a way to figure it out - if you check the truck and find a different number, especially on the frame as Vaughn mentions, then you can figure someone came up w/ a 64 title for the 66 truck that didn't have one - or maybe it was stolen eek

Ok I checked in the cab for vin # with no luck looks liked it had been removed Looks like there used to be a sticker there at on timethere is a tag on the kick panel but not the vin just tells weight, color, etc So I checked the frame which only gives a partial vin which does match the title. Leaves me to wonder if American classics vin checker is accurate

well, the next step is check all the differing details between 64 and 66 - must be a number of changes in 3 years that could give a hint - like maybe in Gunnell's book on old Chevy trucks

You stated it looks like there was a tag on the door frame that had been removed. Were on the door frame was it located?

As Vaughn said a 64 will be on the side about halfway between the latch & top (this would be the drivers side.) The 66 would have been located on the top dead center.

If you can see were it used to be, this alone should tell you which year it is.

You would have to wonder why anyone would remove the VIN tag.

ok I was checking to see where the remains of the sticker were and just started looking all around the door frame first off Someone primered the truck a while back I assume to help preserve it Second I found the vin tag not near the door latch but directly overhead in the center it appears to be original and untouched. Now the thing is you cant change a vin number on a title that I'm aware of nor the year All numbers match and the title says 64 but the vin decoder says 66 its not a big deal and I'm not worried about anything Just curious well other then I Know in 64 they had 230 engines and 66 had 250 so I'm wandering what I have in case I need parts guess I need to find numbers on engine but that will require some old oil build up to be removed. Keep the comments and help coming Do you think it may be a 66? I'd be more likely to beleave it was the other way around and the title said 66 and the vin decoder said it was a 64 because sometimes the year on the title reflected when the truck was sold.

-66's had 230's as well as 250's [and 292's I think]
-66 VIN should start w/ C-1446 for 1/2 and 3/4T's
-64 didn't have the letter, and the 5th digit is the year
considering that there were definite ID numbering conventions for any given year, I doubt the decoder has it wrong, tho it's always possible - it's also possible that some govt desk jockey made a clerical error - is this the very first title the truck ever had, or maybe the 6th? grin

-66 fender side emblem is in the same location as the 64 but it's different emblem - 66 emblem is in different position [lower] than 65, but similar style to the 65
66 was the first year for the all sychro 3 speed

help any? grin

The guy I got it from said it had a 250 it appears to be original the vin does start with c1446 it is a half ton. I would say this isn't the first title I don't think the guy I bought it from was the first owner as he was to young smile
Very possible that a gov person messed up but I didn't think they changed years are entered that stuff. Here you can can ghange title info if you build 1 out of 2 and get the state police to inspect it and then they re-register it.
This may just remain a mystery.

I suggest you straighten the title issue out. If you are ever involved in an accident, your insurance company will see a discrepency between your title and your truck and deny your claim. A friend of mine went through this a while back. It was a hail damage case so no one else's vehicle was involved. He was nervous enough about it that he decided to scrap his car just in case something more serious was to happen,

But there is nothing wrong all numbers on the truck and frame match the title. Its the vin decoder program that says the truck year is wrong.
The vin plate hasn't been tampered with either. I don't know that anything can be done but I'm getting it put in my name tomorrow I'll ask the license office then.

I thought your title said that it's a 64. From all of your information (and what the decoder says), your truck is really a 66. Got any pictures to show us? Also, list your VIN number here so the guys with the "books" can decode it for you. Just a thought,
Scott

I don't think Frank's cruncher does the 60-66 series yet Brendan, but yeah let's see the number

you say it starts C1446 - that means 66 - I vote for clerical error, lotsa half blind pencil pushers out there who can only think of the day they get to retire!

Yup looks like clerical error the number is C1446F112573 its a mississippi title I bought it from another stovebolter. I just talked to a buddy of mine that said Ms. didn't use titles until the 70's which means they used bill of sales and someone sold the truck and just guessed at the year probably.
So I have a 66 that is titled as a 64 do to clerical error which is no biggie I rather have a 66 as that is the year I was born.
thanks for all the help and info smile

When I got my truck it was titled as a 1966, but it's a 1965. I had to write a short reason why I thought the truck was a 1965 when I got the title transferred into my name, and if the folks at the DMV had no problem with my explanation, they would change the year. when my title came in the mail a bit latter, it was changed to 1965. Just check with your DMV to see what it would take to get it right before you transfer it to your name.

The reasons I used won't work for your truck, because the options my truck lacked were standard on 1966 trucks, like seat belts. Back up lights were an option in 1964, but standard in 1966, as were seat belts.

I checked with the dmv I have to have a officer look at the vin and verfiy it and I'll guess they will change it then.
I found out the story from the guy I bought it from it appears the truck was sold as a 66 but when he went to title it Ms. said the vin come back as 64 and so that it was they titled it as the truck came from Tn. and Ms said Tn. didn't use a data base and Ms did so they assumed they were right and titled it as a 64. But now we all know Ms wrong thanks to my fellow bolters smile
