I typed the VIN from Jr's '57 panel into the cruncher and got a bunch of unknowns...

3A57B112917

If I change it to 3A56B112917 (change the year) it works...

Any Ideas?

Yes.

I never gave the cruncher the ability to crunch VINs for trucks newer than 1956.

Doesn't '57 decode the same as '56?

..of course i've always meant to have it go as far as 1959 at least.. and eventually go as far as 1972.. I just haven't gotten around to it.

You know, i'm not absolutely sure on that point.

I vaugely remember adding support for 1956 trucks, and thinking that the numbering scheme was a little different than 55's.. but the '57's thru '59's were simular.

The idea was to add '56 support and have people test it.. not just for the '56 years, but for all years.. to make sure the newly added '56 data hadn't corrupted the other data.

I then added a new thread and mentioned '56 support, asked for people to test and let me know.. but there was little to no responce.. then I got distracted.. to be honest I had forgotten all about the VIN Cruncher untill just now.

One of those.. "hey, thats a cool idea.. wait a second.. *I* made that!" kind of moments.

There was a time when I was pretty gung-ho about the project.. I always wanted to add pictures, or at least the sketches (from the resto/shop manuals) of the different model trucks to the Cruncher.. that way when you typed in the "vin" of a '46 you'd get a picture of what the truck would have looked like along with the decoded data.. a public plea for this information resulted in 0 responce, so I said to hell with it.

I think it is a great tool! It deciphered the number correctly when I put it in as a '56. It added a zero as the first digit though... If I added the zero it would not work. I think the Idea about a picture to go along with the Info would bee reeeeeel cooool!

So, here is some feedback. I have used the vin cruncher on the one from my 46 and it works great!

You've got the Art Deco market wired, probably, for pictures, but if you need a pic of a beaten up old 1946 3600, let me know.

The cruncher adds a 0 to some numbers in it's attempt to decide what set of "keys" to use to unlock the VIN you entered.

A real programmer probably would have used two seperate variables, one for the "represented" VIN (what you see when you type in the number) and the "calculated" VIN (the number it runs thru it's algorithym) so people wouldn't see the what should be "behind the scenes" manipulation of your entered VIN.

I remember thinking to myself when I added that aspect of the cruncher that I outta do that.. but I then thought, "Well, i'll leave it this way so I can make sure it's manipulating the data properly.. and fix it later."

As they say in the film industry, "Let's move on, we'll fix it in post!" (meaning post production)

I think its a great tool too! It helped me idintify my truck. I think the picture idea is really cool too!
