I have a 46 Chevy and have seen a title for sale for a similar truck. Can I buy that title and use it on my truck?

I don't think that is legal, In some states if you have a bill of sale they can issue a new title to you. That is what my understanding is from some of the posts I seen in the past.

I am not saying it's legal, but it is definitely being done. There are even blank VIN plates available.

Get a set of steel stamps and you're good to go.

That said, if you want to play by the rules, don't be afraid to check with your state DMV. That is, don't be afraid to check with them if you call from a pay phone and don't give your name. I was surprised to learn that in my state, I can get a new title issued fairly easily.

Our '59 did not come with a title and the p.o. never had a title. I just need to submit the oldest plates on the truck or the VIN. The state will run a check to see if it was previously titled, then contact the last recorded owner (if possible) and verify the truck isn't stolen. I imagine somebody could claim it was, but highlly unlikely, especially up here in squaresville. Once that's done, (cost is about $10) your new title is issued.

On the other hand, I'm not kidding about being careful not to give too much information. One of my employees once called the local EPA office to MAKE SURE we were following environmental regulations. She did not give her name, but the town is small enough that it didn't take much for the EPA jerk to put 2+2 together. We got a surprise inspection the next week.

Fortunately, we passed with flying colors, but what upset me was the fact that we were trying very, very hard to be responsible and do the RIGHT thing! For that, we got slapped around by a desk jockey.

now days you can buy just about anything you want,, but I too would check in with my local DMV, get their advice and do it the legal way....you will sleep much better and all of us would feel better,,cause we are all honest bolters

If your state gives you the old red tape runaround call Broadway Title, they will fix you up.

Check this site...there is a post on here somewhere saying that Indiana is an easy state and explains how it was done.

By the way...if you call the local DMV deputy in MN, you get someone who would NEVER know how to deal with a 50 year old stovebolt. They just never deal with them. Call at the state level only. There is probably an office/person(s) that deal with this kind of stuff.

and I would not be too concerned with DMV and caller ID...EPA...maybe...but not the DMV..

In Arkansas, you can get a bonded title. I am going thru that with my 52 Dodge. You fill out a form, get the local police or state trooper to do a V.I.N verification, send this info in, and for(quote) "a percentage of what we think the truck is worth, (means YOUR money) we will issue you a title. They did not say whay % it would be. Clear as mud, ain't it?
