Guess what I got in the mail yesterday? I know some of you out there don't go for these special license plates, but I just got my first ones ever. This was prompted by the idea of using a panel rear section (1951) to make a custom Fleetside bed to put on my 1955 first series.

It will now be known as...

FATBED

Who else has special plates and what does yours say?

For years I had a plate that read "AKATHLI."

I couldn't get all the required letters and diacritical marks in (A'ka'lii, pronounced ah'KAHth'lee). It is a close approximation to the Navajo word for cowboy.

Maybe I'll try to get that one again here in Texas.

John's Dodge plate is Paniolo which is Hawaiian for cowboy.

Alaska only allows 6 letters/numbers. It makes it a little harder to come up with good plates.
Was thinking about ERLY55 or 55FRST, 55 1ST was already taken.

Here's a little bit-o-info for you Californians:

Your vehicle must have active registration for you to obtain vanity plates. The DMV will allow you to purchase vanity plates but the DMV will NOT provide you with the plates if your vehicle is non-op'd.

That's just a little somethin' that was missin' from their "buy online" webpage.

Here in Ohio,I have historical license for both of my trucks.For an additional $3.I can use same year plates.My 55 has a set of 1955 farm plates on it,it draws a lot of attention.The 72 has a regular set of 1972 plates.

Only six in Kentucky too, but when I go back in I am gonna try to get...

PIEWAGN was already taken here in PA.
So, I had to go with PYEWAGN.
Good enough for me though. I've got a photo of it in my webshots Piewagon folder.

Like Dale, I was lucky to find an original plate: a rare 1953 NY Suburban commercial plate, with a 1954 year tag. The good news is that only one plate was used that year and thus only one original-year plate can be displayed, the number was not being used, and there are no serious New York State restrictions on use of the vehicle.

However, the vehicle lived its early (first 24) years in VA and is having a hard time thinking of itself as a New Yorker (darn yankees).

Time to renew the tag on the vehicles and have wanted to go with a vanity tag for the 59 but here in GA they cost a fortune EVERY year and don't want one that bad. Was about to settle for the antique/collector tag then GA came out with a new plate design that I consider ugly and ignorant. I've decided to keep the old plate on all the vehicles even tho they are everyday run of the mill.

here in indiana they cost 48.00 ea. year and half goes to each party, plus your reg. plate cost. i have two , one for my pt , setlmnt, because my divorce settlement aloud me to pay cash for it and thumb my nose at her a little bit because she wanted the divorce after 35 yrs. the truck will get its plate in jan. oryx , unicorn was taken, the meaning should be obvious to me any way, (one horn). been divorced 3 yrs. no girl friend yet. ron

on the flatbed hauler we are buiding it will have

C2CTRKN for ( sea to sea trucking company )

One of the few things Ohio has going for it.Historical plates cost less than $20. and they are good for 50 years.For an additional $3 or $4. you can display plates for the year of your vehicle.You still have to carry your historical plates with you.Supposed to be used for car shows,parades,etc.,but as long as you dont drive your vehicle as a regular driver no one bothers you.Around here there are cruisins every nite during the summer,so this gives you quite an opportunity to drive your old bolt.

I have a Torch Red, 1966, C-10, Custom Cab, LWB, Fleet Side with "LILRD66" as the personalized plate. I also have a Jet Black, 1966, K-10, Custom Cab, LWB, Fleet Side with "BCKNBLK" as the personalized plate.

Next summer I'll have to come up with one for my 1950 GMC Suburban. Hmmmmm... Something will come to me during the long hours of work...

Just to be clear , Ca. historical plates are NOT year of manufacture ("YOM") , you can drive your YOM plated vehicle anywhere anytime at all .

The ' Historical vehicle ' plates are for buggies and such although the rules allow you to put them on your 50's vehicles too , they have significant use restrictions to them that allow you to save over 50 % on your insurance but woe betide the person who wrecks during rush hour with historical plates .

Back when vanity plates first hit California , I had a few but now I run the old black & yellow plates issued in 1963 when they dropped the older yellow & black ones , vehicles so equipped are beginning to thin out as stupid DMV clerks don't want to bother with the additional 1 minute (really!) it takes to keep that lovely black plate in service at NO COST to the vehicle owner , preferring instead to issue the ugly reflectorized modern plates in lieu .

I saw one fellow who figured out how to reflectorize the yellow paint on his black & yellow plates , they looked normal in sunlight but the letters & numbers lit right up at night when a light shone upon it .

just be glad you don't live in indiana. plates are now painted on not imbossed as b/4. ask popcorn what he thinks. i have one on my pt crusier setlmnt, because my divorce allowed me to pay cash for it. my 54 will have oryx on it in jan. when they get around to issuing it. btw unicorn was taken, same thing as oryx??????? some think. ron

I heard about this guy who couldn't afford vanity plates. So he just had his name changed to JGZ-261!
