It's called "Reworking the Chevrolet and GMC Engines" by Frank ("Stroker") McGurk. My copy seems to be from around 1953. Its listed price is 50 cents. There's lotsa good stuff in there...like building the "Conservative Road Job", the "Hot Road Job" or the "Full Race Engine." There's even a section on running 5 Stromberg carbs. Not a lotta info on it, but a few pics of a 302 Jimmy with 5 97s on it on a dyno. I hope someone can help ya with a more contemporary book. However, if you were to get David Vizard's book, "Rebuilding the Smallblock Chevy V8" (or something like that) you could transfer 90 percent of the info over to the 292. Great mtor, btw. I love mine: Good luck with it, | | | | | Joined: May 2003 Posts: 224 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2003 Posts: 224 | thanks for the input Chevyasylum, ill have to look and see where i could get me that book. u know were u got yours?
i love the 292 as well, my dad's got one in his 75 sports van. over 300,000 miles and has yet to be touched by a mechanic, still starts every time.
btw love your website, im always refering to the pics on it. glad to know that your liking that 292, at some point i thought i read u were going to change it out for a small block v8. nice to know u still have it in there. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 170 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 170 | When I was young and stupid (I'm not young anymore) I used to rebuild old VW's and the book I used was for "The Complete Idiot". I would like to find a book like that one, for 6's. This will be my first rebuild of a 216 and would like not to miss anything. So I would like to ask the same question as Murdoc. Which book are you talking about? The Stroker McGurk book? If so, that one's been outta print for so long it ain't funny. I spose it might be worth a coupla bucks on eBay. I looked for one there but didn't see any. It's really a collector's item. The other book by David Vizard is available at Amazon.com and other bookstores. Glad you enjoyed the website. I hope to have some updates on the 85 Monte Carlo, since it's nearing the "firin up" point. It'll have to get a little bit warmer before that happens, tho. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2004 Posts: 1,780 | | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 | Yep. As I understand it, the website is the software tool that bunches and bunches of various independet used bookstores nationwide use to put their books online. The site, alibris - has a user name and password, etc.... you pay alibris, and they take care of paying the bookstore.. instead of you having to deal with the details. I have not used it myself, but an online pal of mine swears by it. I do have a registration, I just have not found something I wanted on there yet.
