I was just looking at my steering column and thinking about the horror stories of the early 60's vehicles columns going through the driver's chest in a collision. Is there a modern collapsable steering column I could pick up in a wrecking yard that would easily swap into a 62 c-30?

A jeep intermediate shaft is collapsable and also has double D end.
The intermediate shaft fit my column perfectly, it also has U-joints at both ends.
Worked for me and only cost $20.

They work under the same principle as an air bag holding you in the driver seat and preventing you from impacting the windshield.
Strenghtening of stomach muscles was recommended.
