I need your help gang. When I bought my truck it had a hole in the cab. I assumed it was for a radio antenna but as I found out it is not in the stock location. Please look at the picture and help try to figure out what it is for.

Looks like the hole, where the shaft of a Spotlight came through. Does it go all the way through, to the inside of the cab. If so, that's what it is.

You know I never looked on the inside of the cab. Will be sure to do that tonight. I wonder why there is no place for a radio antenna. Were radio's an option and if you opted not to there wasn't a place for them on the cab?

Chris-

Most radio antennas were mounted on the flat surface of the cowl in a way to avoid a bash by the hood when opened. On my rig, someone drilled the atenna hole without checking for hood clearance. Open the hood, end of antenna! Relocation is one of my summer projects!

The hole you have fits with the spotlight option, but could be converted for pillar mounting of the antenna.

Well thanks gang for the input. Any idea where I can get antenna to work for a radio?

Chris,
if you want the original style antenna, most of the AD truck suppliers carry them. The original style antenna mounted on the driver's side cowl in a very specific location. They also have a metal bracket inside that attaches to the inside side cowl metal. The antenna should come with a mounting layout pattern.

That hole is way to small for a spotlight.

Depends on the brand of Spotlight used, as to wheather yhe hole is too small, or not. One of the '48 Chevrolet Parts trucks, I have, had two spotlights on it originally, & the holes, are about the size of a Dime.

It looks like spotlight and then the hole was filled partially when they preped the body for paint. When the body was preped they didn't fill it because they weren't sure what it was for. My best guess. Cecil.........

Chris that hole is where a spotlite was mounted at one time.As for the antenna,I would check the auto parts out for a wire antenna you can tape on the winshield inside.Drilling holes sucks. The cars had this type on antenna put in factory windshield in the 60-70+ also check out the CD players No antenna needed.Just listing to the motor purr is good enuff for me.

wouldn't the spotlight also have had an outside bezel that had 2 screws to clamp it against the post? where're those holes?

I have had alot of spotlights but have never seen one with a shaft that small. There would also be 2 screw holes for the mounting bracket.

It maybe a hole for those "dummy" spotlights and the other hole got covered during the prepwork.

Sorry, Not on this one I have. My brother removed the spots, off of it, personally. Only had one smaller hole, for the mounting bracket, on each side..

I looked last night and there was no indication of a second hole on the inside where a spotlight handle would be.

The only guess I can come up with is it was a hole drilled by the P.O. and used as an antenna for the crappy radio I pulled out.

My plan is to hit Napa or Autozone and locate a antenna I can use for a radio/cd player that I plan to mount under the seat.

Thanks everyone,

Chris

Alan..was wondering where you got that antenna...checked my Chevy Duty catalog, and you are right..looks pretty cheap.. I tried to find one on Truck Shop, but their online catalog leaves a lot to be desired...I mounted a spring base antenna on the cowl about 2yrs ago without thinking about opening the hood, but it works pretty well as it just springs back a little when the hood is open...really want to do one likes yours though..love the look

Hey, Shooper

I would phone Chevy Duty and the Truck Shop and ask if their mounts are stainless or plastic, making sure they know I don't like the idea of plastic.

Last time I looked, I thought the Truck Stop had the right one.
