I'm curious to see if anyone has any pics of a hitch on their stovebolt truck. I'm sure any hitch would have to be a custom job. I haven't seen any hitches that are made for this generation of truck.

Reason I ask is because mine is a 3/4 ton, and to get a hitch on it, I have to drop it down pretty low since the back end is so high up. If I do that, the hitch effectively becomes the bumper because it's car-height.

Any custom hitch installations out there?
Thanks.

i think you are right about the custom part. i have called e-mailed and tried everywhere. i did see an adustable hitch at auto zone for about 100.00. i think it will work. hidden hitch makes them for 59 and up but not for the earlier ones. a local tire shop says can get me one but i am not sure he is right. don't give up and let us all know if you find one plEEEEEEEEEEEase.. ron

If you can weld, your local farm and fleet stores carry the parts you need to build your own hitch. Then to get the heighth you want, you buy the appropriate drop hitch for your receiver. I've adapted several hitches from take-offs for my trucks. A little welding, a little drilling, you have hitch.

I don't know what year your truck is, but i tok one from a dodge mini-van and narred it down for my 64. The drop is perfect and looks just like it was made for my truck.

Excuse my spelling! That is why you should proofread before you post. I took one from a dodge mini-van and NARROWED it down.

I've got a custom hitch. Easy to make, easy to weld. Very strong.

Okay. I went ahead and installed the hitch I picked up last summer at a swap meet. All I know about it is it's a really rugged GMC/Chevy truck hitch that is rated at 1000 pounds tongue weight and 8500 pounds towing capacity. I bolted AND welded it to the frame. All I had to do to make it work was cut about an inch of metal off the mount surface to clear the spring mounts on the frame.

Even though it drops down to the right height for a conventional ball receiver, which makes it kind of obvious back there, I will install a bumper above it to partially dress it up a little nicer.

I really think a higher hitch would look better, and then a drop down ball to make the hook up the right height for trailers, etc.

BTW, it makes a really nice step to get up into the bed...as long as the tailgate is not down.

This is a late reply, but I've posted pix of my welded hitch for 53 Chevy 1/2 ton. It's 1/2" X 3" steel. Cut and paste and go to this URL:

If that doesn't work, anybody interested can E-mail me for the pix

I just spoke to the people at Hidden hitch. Nothing for 55-59 Chevy trucks. I would like to install a hitch on my '59 fleetside to pull my newly aquired '51` teardrop trailer. Any suggestions?

4d9r, go look at auto zone they have an adjustable hitch, for width. i you use it let us know , i am going to try later in the year. if the beds are the same for 54 to 82 chevy stepsides arre the frames? i know the fenders are wider but is there any other changes? you would think that a hitch for a later model would fit. must be the old computer glitch if the computer doesn't say so it doesn't work. all the old knowledge has retired. another soap box for another time. ron
