Folks,

I have a pair of two-piece, split-rim artillery wheels, 16", 6-lug, that fit the old chevies (they were on my '47 sedan when I got them). I have never heard of GM using split artillery rims, only solid ones. I emailed the folks at Jim Carter's and they told me this is not a GM wheel (although it fits the GM 6-lug hub). Any ideas on what these wheels possibly came off of? Judging by what I've seen the solid arty wheels go for on ebay, I think they might fetch a few bucks, and I'd like to sell them so I can continue to pour money into my old chevies. Thanks for the input.

Tyler

Split rims are not unsafe per se. Damaged or rusted out split rims are unsafe. I've never heard of them being "not aloud". Do you mean "not allowed"? I've never heard of any factory configuration not being allowed on an old vehicle.

But if you want to send them to a bone yard you can send them to mine.

The first year Chev. made a 3/4-ton was 1937. The 3/4-tons shared the 6-bolt axles and drums with the 1/2-tons until 1946 when they got the heavier 8-bolt parts that we now associate with 3/4-tonners. The standard wheel on the '37-'42 3/4 was the 15 x 5-1/2" artillery wheel which is highly valued today since it looks good and will take a modern 15" radial tire. This 15" wheel was an option on the 1/2 tons. Heavy duty 3/4 tons in those years came with an odd looking 17" wheel. Some earlier Chev. cars came with a narrow 16" artillery wheel which has very little value. I have never seen a 16" split rim artillery wheel. Can you maybe post a picture of the wheel in question?

Is this wheel riveted or welded together?

Local welding shops used to weld the wider split rims on the customers orginal wheel centers to increase the load capacity.

These babies are original, unmodified, and riveted.

My dad has an '88 light 3/4-ton with 6-lug axles. That configuration came back at some point.
