I recently purchased a 1955 series 1, chevy half ton and it has a large hole in the top of the dash. It is located about center between the gauges. It appears to have been done at the factory or at least professionally done long ago. I cannot find any pictures of other trucks with this same hole or one with an accessory installed there.
I'm new to old trucks and new to this board. I don't know yet how to post a picture here but I can e-mail a couple of pictures if it would help to see it.
Thanks, Steve

The clock has a housing and only needs some small holes. Your hole must have been owner cut. The only hole on top of the dash would be for the wiper switch.

plastic jesus meltdown??? i don't recall seeing such a hole on top of the dash. probably a p.o. drilled the thing for who knows what. should be a not to bad fix--if the windshield is out. old trucks usually have a sturdy dshbouard.

The clock option requires three holes. A large one about the size of a quarter, and two small holes for attachment. I think the larger hole is so the clock light bulb can be changed with out removing the clock.

Hope this helps.

Its an access hole to allow you to see what you are doing while trying to replace bulbs or remove or connect wires.

This is typically a dealer-installed option unless the modification was performed by someone else.

Thanks everybody. I was planning to patch it but then had second thoughts. Figured first I should check with people who knew more about old trucks than I did. I appreciate your help. I'll be reading these boards regularly for information and will probably be asking a lot more questions before I'm through. Thanks Joy for posting the picture.

I contacted Doc Brown. That hole is the intake to the flux capacitor.

It's a cup holder (you need to cut it bigger for a Big Gulp).

Just went out and checked by truck. Large hole in the middle about the size of a half dollar with three small holes for attachment.

Just a note about the clock; it is on the shelf in the garage at this time. Works perfectly. It was made by the New Haven Clock and Watch Co. It is truely a large watch. It is mechanical of course, and will run 48 hours on a full winding.

When I first bought my 54, the clock was something I though I would sell off. But have come to like it as well as the visor.

1955 air conditioning.
I see the vent louver is missing (they are VERY RARE) would of had a 2 3/4" duct hose that ran over to the cowl vent.

Any hole just big enough for your kid to put his finger in, or his hand or head, is so you can appreciate that life will never be back to normal until they are grown up and living on their own.
