For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 31 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 31 | Hi, Here is a link to my truck in the body shop: http://www.excelsus.com/~sjones/dirt_car/DSC00717.JPG The picture is a bit big. The shop says I should get a new hood because there is too much bondo on mine. Any suggestions for a new hood? Also, my gas tank is under the bed of the truck, toward the rear... they recommend a new one because they have no idea where this one came from . Any ideas? The truck has a 454 engine, turbo 350 trans and power everything. I bought it thinking it just needed a paint job but boy was I wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! I dont know why you need a new gas tank just because you dont know the origin of the one that's in it. Is it clean? BTW welcome.

If you find another hood find out how much they would charge to have it moulded before you give them the go ahead. Have you inspected the gas tank yourself? What are the issues beside not knowing what it is out of? Now that the project has changed from a paint job to ??????? Think about getting a second opinion. ...g | | | | | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 58 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 58 | awesome, is that a shelby in the pix. Too much Bondo might be a reason to go to another hood. I made that decision on my '56 when the paint was removed from the fenders, and way too much Bondo as far as I was concerned--I went with new fiberglass fenders, but, of course that is a personal choice. I also had my fuel tank taken out of the cab and moved behind the rear axle, but I agree with Bill Gervais, no need to change it if it's not full of "crud" or damaged. Sounds like you purchased a truck that is well along the path to becoming a nice "ride". Keep us posted on the progress, and great picture! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 31 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 31 | Hey guys, They recommended me finding another tank because they don't know what it's from -- he said if I ever needed a new sending unit, they wouldn't know what to get. Does that make sense? I'm new to restoring. That mustang was my 1968 Eleanor clone from the movie Gone in 60 seconds (remake with Nick Cage). I had that same shop do the build. I turned around and sold it. Now I can use that money toward the truck! For pics of the Eleanor build: http://www.eleanorclub.com/photo/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=2 Does anyone know who sells hoods? When you build a custom like you have, you are the only one who will know what is what. A tank might be spendy. If the one you have is still working, you can spend the money...but like a lot of parts on an old or custom truck, you pull the part, either post a picture of the tank and sending unit on this website or bring it to your local salvage or auto parts store and have someone ID it...then go buy a new one...
Example...I wanted a paper air cleaner element instead of the stock oil based cleaner...I pulled the element out and went to the auto parts store...20 minutes and 6 or 7 boxes later, I came up with the correct paper filter...I know a $12 air filter is a lot different than a gas tank....but if you post a shot of it....I would guess someone on here knows what it is from...It is almost scary what you can find out on here...
If the quality and appearance match what you are trying to do....leave the tank as is. You will have other stuff you will want to spend your money on....
Just my opinion...... | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | As far as the hood goes, US Body Source sell race weight fiberglass hoods complete, otherwise you'll probably have to find a good used one which shouldn't be that difficult. Where abouts are you from, I have a complete truck (1950 3100) just sitting around, Scott | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 31 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 31 | I'm in Virginia.
Thanks guys. I will see if I can take some more detailed pics of the truck tomorrow.

Just wait 'til we get some snow and Scott will toboggan down there on one. (He might want a ride home tho...) By the way, more detailed pictures will be great. I just procured a 454 for my '47. I'll need to be figuring out how it's gonna fit.
