Need length instructions for lap belts for my bench seat. I also thought about putting in wind up type belts. Can somebody help me on this? I don't want 3-point belts. Don't want to drill big holes above. Don't know exactly what length to get for the ones that I want. And what is the best supplier to get the belts that I want? Need help on this. Thankyou...

BESIDES the small floor area that you would use to hold the belts to the floor have several advavtages. the seat support rim above the floor helps to stiffen that area and you could also add a small plate below the floor, welded or not. the area where the shoulder harness bolts to is down in that deep pocket area that has many different angles for rigidity. seat frame access tip http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view¤t=IMG018.jpg dave's site for installation: http://www.speedprint.com/Deves50/seatbeltassembly.php

It was a breaze. I bought 2 pair (left and right from Advanced Auto Parts (black in color) 60" length (max), the belt kits are about $15.00 each and come with all the neccessary mounting hardware, belts, L brackets, bolts, dimpled flat washers, and nuts. It only requires determining proper location, a drill/bits and wrenches to install them. Location of the belts was determine sitting on the bench seat centered in front of the steering wheel and placing small pieces of masking tape on the seat BACK, where the seat back and seat cushion meet an inch or so on either side of my hips. Remove the seat cushion bottom, and use the tape locations to establish approxamately where the belts should extend to the floor pan. Slide the seat frame all the way to the rear position, mark a straight line on the floor pan in line with each tape mark on the rear seat back and locate a drill point about 2-3 inches forward of the rear seat frame. Carefully drill a small pilot hole ensuring that the drill does not hit any frame or mechanisms UNDER the floor pan. If all is clear underneath, drill a hole the diameter of the seat belt bolts and install the mounting brackets with the hardware provided in the kit as per instructions preferably with the L bracket vertical portion towards the rear. Repeat this procedure for the passenger side, or duplicate the position of the holes using a tape measure. Some adjustment of the overall length of the straps can be made at the L bracket when you loop the belt material through the bracket (as per the instruction pamphlet)to achieve your optimum length and look. I mounted mine with both push button release straps towards the center of the seat, with the flange end to the outer. The install was simple, and took about an hour. Other colors of these belts are available at most parts stores.

Classic Parts of America, I think. Then I went on Ebay and bought three sets of the old spring wound chrome windup devices that slip over the belt and retract the fabric of the belt. The ones I bought had the "flip-up to release" tab and not a pushbutton. I installed three belts across my seat and there is plenty of slack with the exception of the middle belt. What I did is buy grade 8 flat washers, 3" diameter I think and fairly thick. I drilled through the floor under the seat right at the back inner part of the seat frame. One on each of the outsides of the seat frame for the female flip-up ends and then two more closer inside the rear of the frame for the driver and right side passenger male ends. I then installed the middle passenger belt under those inner bolts for the male ends of the other two belts. Each was bolted through the inside floor with a grade 8 bolt sized to fit the hole in the belt end, through the belt end hole, then a lock washer, then one large flat washer. Then on the underside of the floor, another large flatwasher, lockwasher and the nut. With the exception of a snug fit for one of my friends with a larger belly who sits in the middle seat, the driver and outer passenger have plenty of room in the repop belts. Very snug and seem to have plenty of strength to hold you back in the case of a panic stop. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 275 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 275 | When I did the interior of my '56, I used a 60-40 center seat from a '99 Tahoe that was tight against my cab corners so 3-pt. belts were not an option. I converted the 3-pt. shoulder belts to lap belts by cutting the retractor belts and having the belt ends resewn. That way I didn't trash out the interior with loose belts lying on the seats. The retractors were mounted to the floor in the cab corners at the rear of the seats. Note that the retractors you use may act weird and lock up if not oriented straight up-and-down as you work with them. The button-end of the belts in my truck were attached to the seat but on original seats that end would have to be mounted to the floor and brought up through the crack. Just an idea. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 582 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 582 | Don't know exactly how long my belts were. Just got them from the vendor. They worked fine. You adjust the length when you're sitting on the seat. They work good. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 31 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 31 | I don't want excess seat belt length laying all over the seat. What kind or style of bracket did you use...or would work best? For AD's that is...My Chev P/U is a 1951...and has the stock (1/2-ton,3100) bench seat inside. I cut two rectangular slots in the back of the seat base to bring the inner ends through. If you don't do that, they will be looped around the seat and this is not a good thing. The ones I first installed were new and not counting the latch, they were 58" in length. That gave me about 1" to spare, not enough. The set I have in there now is about 66" in length. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 | I didn't measure mine but they fit around my body just fine. I'll have to look at the routing again to ensure they are clear of any problem areas. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 283 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2008 Posts: 283 | I'm ready to buy seat belts! This thread has helped me a lot. Looks like mounting belts on a 56 should not be too difficult. Appears enough room to drill and bring them up through the seat. Has anyone mounted the three point? I'm considering it - would like them, but just where and how to mount #3 on the bulkhead seems vague. Maybe not a good idea, but if anybody has done it I would like to know how you did it - a picture would be great. Hope you don't mind me using your thread for this question diditanole - seemed right on target -- Thanks for starting it! -- Dale | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 31 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 31 | No, not at all!
