Prior owner didn’t even have a gasket- just some gasket material. I took the cover off, and applied some gasket adhesive to the cover side of the gasket and it sealed it up. I use 3M Yellow Super Weatherstrip and Gasket Adhesive. I also had to replace all my bolts as they were stripped at the threads to torque properly (I think it’s 30-50 foot pounds

Also, since the bolts go into the differential carrier, it is important to put sealant on the bolt threads to keep gear oil from seeping out. One product I like for this application is Permatex "The Right Stuff". I know, a stupid name but this is a type of sealant that works better than routine RTV. You don't get the seepage later on. It has more adhesive qualities than regular RTV so I wouldn't use it where you routinely remove the part for maintenance.

I had been using a silicone RTV type, and recently I started to use Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket sealant liquid. I figure if it is for use in Aviation applications it will work well in Automotive. Absolutely do not get it on anything other than on the gasket or metal part, it is very difficult to get off your skin, so I suggest wearing gloves. It's a brown liquid much like the old Indian Head gasket sealer. 25-30 pounds torque on the bolts should be sufficient.
