im buying a sandblaster today but i dont know were to get the sand i asked the guy at the hardware store but he didnt know also im looking for an air compresor any suggestions on brand,hp,or anything else im working on a 54' chevy 5 window i took it completely apart now i have to sandblast the chassis and start putting it back together

In the Houston area you can get sand at several places. Where are you?

Northside - McCauley's in Tomball
West Side - Katy Hardware

Most Ace Hardware stores have it but expect to pay more.

Use #4 sand.

What type of blaster are you using? Pressure pot or siphon?

Air compressor should be a twin cylinder oil lube style. The big box hardware stores have a good model for about $400 but will need 220 vac service. If you are wanting to use a 110 vac compressor you will not get the pressure you need to blast effectively. Do not buy an oil-less type compressor. Will not last for your expected needs. Tractor and Supply stores had a nice compressor last time I was in there.

This is were i get my aircompressor pumps and assorted parts. Read the site, these guy know moving air, and are alot cheaper than the box stores, when you know what your buying.

breathing sand during sand blasting causes silicosis, non reversible lung disease. be careful. carborundum is safer to use and cuts faster also.

Here in town I go to the local concrete mixing folks. They sell it in 100 pound bags. The bags have Blasting Sand written on the outside. Cost here is just under $6 including tax for 100 lbs.We just blasted a chassis with it last Saturday and it works good. We used a small pressurized tank and my 7 hp 80gal tank compressor ran but it would catch up ocassionally and it got to rest while we refilled the tank! Mine is a 7hp 175 psi, 17.9CFM Craftsman Professional. 800 bucks 4 years ago and had given no trouble and I use it a lot...bead cabinet, blasting etc.....best to shop around on the compressor. The really good ones are expensive but there are some that do as good a job and doesn't cost as much. Buy as BIG as you can afford is a good rule of thumb.
Oh, I had bought a nice hood for blasting a while back from Eastwood. It is nice but still need to wear some type respirator even under a hood. Take no chances on health.

Harbor Freight sells several kinds of blast media. So does my local Airgas supplier.

I know this sounds Grusome , BUT just stop bye your local Cemetery Monument place they ,at least in my area have all the Media you would need and are more than willing to sell it to ya
