It seems that I saw it in the Harbor Freight Tool catalog. Does anyone remember this or remember who makes the piece that will fit on a floor jack to use with the removal/installation of a transmission? :confused: Joe

Had to do that on a '49 1 ton with an SM420 in the middle of Feburary 16 years ago, won't do it again either.

supported by a barain store jack and 2x4s, the owner of the truck in the cab holding onto the shifter, with his foot on the cluch pedal trying to guide the input shaft in. Now picture that cheap jack lettin go. Not a fun way to spend the day. Fortunatly I had a good grip on the tranny and managed to stuff it in rather than it falling on me.

Ed - I was at one of my local Harbor Freight stores this afternoon. I ask some of their qualified help about a transmission attachment that would fit onto one of their floor jacks. That qualified help didn't know anything about it. But I thought I saw one once at one of the stores. Can you give me any stock number or any information so I can go back and see if they have the attachment. If not, I will just probably buy a transmission jack. They are on sale for $99.99, but I probably won't ever use it after this episode. I'd rather get out as cheap as I can!! Not that I'm cheap or anything like that . . . . . I don't think autozone has them in their tool rental fleet, but they might... Possibly you could buy it at HF, use it over the weekend, and return it on tuesday for a refund or store credit...
Personally, I'm with 48 big trucks- Once you've got the transmission inspection cover out of the floor it might be easier to use the cherry picker or some rope and a 2x4 on the floor of the truck and then use your floor jack from underneath to maneuver the tranny the last little bit.
Those SM420's ain't light to be bench pressing!

Run a 2x6, 4x4, or larger between the windows. Then use a come-along and chain to lift the tranny. The come-along might have too much lenght, so I'm looking for one of those chain ratchet hoists.
