Some pictures of getting Grandpa's 1934 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck. I drove 5220 miles on this trip.
I could go as fast as 55-60 mph with out the trailer swerving behind me.
I really don't think the brakes were working on the trailer.
The last truck I hauled with our own bigger trailer from Michigan was a little easier.
The truck was a bit in the dirt, down to the front axle.
A little digging and jacking it up and out of the ground, then a few tugs with my 2 wheel drive truck.
It was out and loaded with in 4 hours. Maybe the last trip to Westhope, North Dakota for awhile.
Now I can quit saying I am going to get that truck from the farm.
I have started a collection this summer of trucks(3) and parts (truck body minus the frame)
I with have to remain living here for 10 more years so I can drive Grandpa's truck away.
The truck body I brought home was a guy's great grandfather, it was more of a challange than he hoped it would be.

See the picture of Grandpa's Truck rescue mission.

I enjoyed my 2 week summer vacation.
My wife was kind enough to let me go alone without the three kids. They worked on one of the old trucks sanding in the garage. Hope they keep helping, I need all I can get.
We have been adding another bay to the garage this holiday weekend.
Mike

That truck looked pretty good sitting in that field once you got it out.

Awesome pics, that first one with the truck sitting by itself in the field is just stunning. I also really liked that farm scene with the barn, and that video footage was also way cool.

It does help to have an understanding spouse. (5220 miles!!!) eek eek eek eek eek eek eek

I pulled home 3 of them that were over 300 miles away. My farthest round trip was about 660 miles. (Wolsey South Dakota to Omaha). So far, all of them that I have gone after, I have been able to get them home the same day.

Thanks for sharing the story and the pics. You really made my evening.

Good luck with those trucks. And about our wives, life is good, we are blessed.

John

Now I have the 3 trucks in the garage, Hope I have left room to work. One may have to go outside and get covered up. I started disassembling grandpa's. I need to get it down to the frame so I can start there. I have to use the motor out of the Michigan truck since it turns. I will still have to rebuilt it though.
Keep you posted, check out the pics.

It seems like Friday night and some of Saturday is the only time I get to work on the trucks. I did continue the dissasembly on the fenders and grill this weekend. It must cost about $.50 per bolt to cut it off and $1.00 min. to put one back. I when though a lot of little cutting disk just to get up in the small areas. I shouldn't have anymore body fasteners left to cut soon.

I found some natural electrical wiring insulation on the headlight wires near the radiator support. I couldn't hardly brake it off.

Thanks for the support everyone.

And Tim, I am trying to keep up with you on the project, I may have more apart than you do at this point. smile

Got some more pics to check out.

I was able to remove the cowl now, so the body is now off. I have taken the gas tank off Monday night and heard layers of rust sliding inside.
I think I will have to drop alot of $$$ for a new one. Now to pull the motor and transmission on Sunday.
The frame isn't flaking rust anywhere, not sure if it should be sandblasted or wire wheeled and sanded?
Got some more pics to see!

Mike looks like "grandpa" made quite a few modifications to your truck along the way. Just love that front bumper. Your ruzst out on the sheet metal are typical as Chevrolet didn't always prime the inside of metal panels before installing over the wood frame.

I now have the motor and transmission out of the way, look at the pic of the rusted out oil pan and everything above that.
Nice anchor! Looks like I pulled it up from the Gulf of Mexico.
I only noticed one rusted out spot on the frame. The crossmember for the front motor motor had been fix up and needs more help. I hope to repair the spot were the front bumper was "customized". I may be using a cowl I have that is rustfree from the SD truck. This one is dented up a bit too. Must have happen when the original bumper was destroyed. I got one quote to sandblast the frame @ $81 per hr, 2-3 hour job, maybe.

I have one rivited bracket that broke, I have another good one to replace it but could I get the same rivits to fix it or just bolt this one on?
Got quit a bit done in two nights
Check the Pics.

You can get rivets from McMaster-Carr. Which bracket broke? I have extra rivets for the stamped metal brackets (running board supports and others using the same rivets) if you need them. I also have the rivets for the prop-shaft to pinion gear coupling too.

The running board support broke, the top corner missing.
I am going to remove the steering sector, it is rivited on three of the trucks and was bolted on the forth like the manual calls out. As you saw I must replace it, u-bolt and all.
Are the two bolts in the crossmember holding the front propeller shaft housing always free to spin or welded in place?
I had to spot weld the head to hold in place to remove the nuts.
That worked for now. I could use the rivets if you didn't need them, I would appreciate the help. I will pm you.

The two bolts holding the front prop shaft center support bearing & spacer block should not turn. The steering gear box is removed from the truck by removing the pitman arm from outside the frame. The rest is held in place by bearing journal with two vertical bolt/nuts of which the bottom is riveted to the frame and the top cap is removable when the bolt/nuts are removed. The steering column and gear box come out in a one piece unit.
