I would run a wire from one of the screws on the sending unit housing to the frame or battery itself (negative) and see if that solved the problem. It sounds like the tank has a weak connection to ground, through the cab or through the tank.

If you rock the truck with the key on and the gauge goes nuts, It sure sounds like a defective sending unit. You replaced the sending unit...did the old one act this way?

Scott | | | | | Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 33 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Dec 2006 Posts: 33 | Thanks Stuart&Scott for your time,this seem's to be a bit of a challenge.I ran a temp. ground --same thing.I pulled the unit out a second time and lo&behold when i raise it up and down it works fantastic.As i lowered it in with out touching any metal on the way down slowly it acted up.I got discusted with it and screwed the unit back in.To try to think a bit more on it.When i turned the key on it worked fine ,i tried it a couple more time's through out the day and it still work's.Go figure- maybe they unit is defective?If it does it again i think i'll start with a COLD BEER first instead od last.Thanks for the imput it's always a pleasure stopping by to see what's new here.Chad | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | I think you prolly finally got a good ground by running the screws in and out enuff! ,i finally solved they mistery.I regrounded the wire to the battery and no luck.As before as i took the sending unit and raised it up and down i seemed to work.To make a long story short the arm that raises up and down has a contact point on the metal winding's of the unit it self.It was NOT I SAY NOT making a solid enough contact,i took a screw driver and pushed the end of the contact point against it and BINGO problem solved.PERSISTANCE and being determined that i was smarter than the sending unit payed off.This time any way,till the next delima.Have a good summer all& keep it between the ditches == Chad | | |
