I have had my 52 Chevrolet 2 ton (affectionately known as Schuyler) out for a few rides and what a blast.
However there is something going on that worries me, and puzzles me. Somewhere in the area of the transmission there is a loud clattering or rubbing sound. This noise goes and comes with no degree of predictability, and it doesn't seem to have any connection with various running speeds.
We have taken the plates off and examined the crankshaft for excessive endplay - there is less than an 1/8 inch, so this is pretty much ruled out as a cause. We've also examined the clutch, and flywheel areas, and all looks good there as well.
I don't want to run it until we get to the bottom of the problem, but darn... I want to get going again, and even do some actual hauling....
Any help or suggestins would be greatly appreciated.

Stupid, but is there enough fluid in the tranny and rearend? Maybe a bearing going out in the transmission? Check to make sure everything is still bolted down tight, engine and trans mounts.

Sam the Meat Man,

I think more 'descriptors' would be helpful. Is your clatter a dull heavy noise like a internal engine noise, or a tinny, sheetmetal, driveshaft clatter? Can you feel it as a vibration in your feet, seat or hands.

Have you discovered how to make it happen at will, and can you do this only when moving, or just sitting still or both...under load or coasting..low RPM or high RPM or is in not related to the engine, but more to the drive train...lots of research left to do.

Sam i don't know if you have a hoist or not but you may check to see if the pump is still engaged they can make a lot of noise if you forget to disengage them!
