I have just completed putting all new brake lines-master cylinder- wheel cylinders in my C50 wrecker and was bleeding them. when
i started the engine to see if the hydro boost worked. It worked well for about five trys on the pedal then the exhaust started billowing white smoke real bad. did the hydro boost give up the ghost.It almost killed the engine.I shut it down and then re started it again -still smoking and when i hit the brake pedal it really started billowing again.The engine ran perfectly before with not a puff of smoke.I think it is sucking through the vacuam. My question is where can i find a rebuilt-or new- or parts to rebuild this one. and does anybody know the approximate cost of any of the above.Or does anybody have a good known spare that they would sell reasonable. It is a delco- remy. Some body told me that in 66 they changed to a brand called midland.????? If any one can help I know it will be here with all the combined wisdom and knowledge of the agesThanks in advance Lou. H.

Go to your local NAPA or CarQuest parts house and order one. You'll need to send yours back as a core too,

Thanks scott. We dont have a carquest but we do have a napa. I will check them. Does Any body else have any more helpful suggestions.

Midland is a large supplier of brake foundation parts as well as vacuum and air chambers, etc. Most any heavy duty garage or parts house will carry thier line. Also check semi-trailer dealers for it.

I can't seem to find hydrovac on the NAPA web site nor does my local NAPA dealer carry the item in thier catalog. Anyone have a link or supplier? Help...

virginiafiretruck I just walked in and ask them and they pulled out a dusty book and found it. I have to bring mine in to get the right # off of it and for the core . Your napa dealer is just not looking in the right place. It is just so old i dont beleive it would be on thier site.

I just checked the Napa website for 1965 Chevy. They only go to 1-ton but found hydravac brake booster part#NBB519111. $235.OO + $84.50 core.

Biglou55: First, thank you. I have it off the truck. The brass tag on one of the j-bolts reads #374000. Here is a picture of my hydrovac:

I stopped in a NAPA store this afternoon in Grandy North Carolina and they didn't have anything on the hydrovac. Then I stopped in Pungo this evening and they don't have anything later than 1965. they said if I brought mine in, they would send it out to be rebuilt but didn't know how long that would take. I'd rather rebuild it myself if I can find a kit.

My truck is a 1951 2 ton 6400 series. Note: There was no C designation back then as far as I know. Thanks.

Believe it or not: I just punched in the 374000 number on the NAPA parts web site and there is my hydrovac!!! I learn more everyday on this web site. Thanks to everyone for your help!!!

V firetruck I have the #s I will take them over tomorrow. I didnt know your truck was that old. I will probably strike out too but i will give it a shot. Go to one of burgies posts and click on his 64 dumptruck site. click on brakes then click the picture of his hydrovac. thier is a company on thier called bcs brake parts where you can buy rebuild kits and do it yourself.Happy hunting. V.F.T. you must have posted while i was typing. what did it say about cost. Mine is 200. 224without the core. Check burgies site if you want to do it yourself. It is very informative.

Even if they don't look the same, they all work the same. I'm thinking there were many hydro-vac vendors over the years,

It was $269 plus $184 core. Seems expensive to me but it might stop the truck in an emergency and then it might be worth the cost. Atleast I've ordered it. We'll see how long until it arrives... Thanks again!

Reached NAPA today to find out status of my hydrovac order. Seems they do not have one in stock (special order), so it will take them five days to obtain it and then ship it to me. All in all, about two weeks and not all that bad...

They had to order mine to. they said four days, We will see.

NAPA sent me an email to say the rebuilt hydrovac has been shipped. I'm ready to install it now!

virginiafiretruck. that looks like the same unit as on my 1959 4400 series. they told me you could't buy a rebuild kit because of new federal regs.you need to be certified to rebuild them. more federal b.s. tore mine apart,fairly simple,and found the leather piston seal all gummed up. was a reman. and had been assy. with grease. cleaned it up,soaked it in oil,i used marvel mystery oil,any light weight oil should work, put it back together and it works fine.it could save you a couple hundred bucks to try this. there a fairly simple unit. galen

Thanks but I already purchased one from NAPA. I tried to buy a rebuild kit but seemed to get nowhere with that effort.

Hydrovac arrived this evening...It looks a little bit different but I think it will do the job.

My lovely wife wants me to put up Chrismas lights and decorations this weekend. Yep, the truck has to wait. But I'm still ready to put the hydrovac in, first chance I get.
