For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 60 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 60 | I just talked to a guy at Advanced Adaptors and he said the 350 will bolt right up to an SM420 without any adaptor needed replacing my babbit engine. Is this true because it seems too simple. What other modification will I need to do besides engine mounts and exhaust/steering clearances? I need help quick so I can find or order a new engine to get the truck working again. Thanks! | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 66 | I would think I'd want to upgrade the transmission of I'm already upgrading to a small block. I was thinking like a turbo 400 maybe... But I'm still new to all this. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | What you will need is a bell housing from a '55 snd-'66 v-8.excluding '60-62 with hydraulic clutch. The 350 will not bolt up to the 6 cylinder bell housing. The sm420 will bolt up fine to the v-8, it was an option until '67.

The original bellhousing will not fit the motor. The trick is you need to bolt that bellhousing to your frame.
Either you need to change the crossmember or make adapters to mount the bellhousing to the exisitng crossmember.
This is a doable project but it does require some work and maybe fabrication. I've seen it done very neatly, almost stock looking, and I've seen it cobbled together looking dangerous to drive or ride in.

Will the Jim Carter,Chevy Duty or LMC v8 engine mount kit work in the big bolts (1.5 ton)?
2. Is the SM420 strong eneough for the 300HP 350 or should I upgrade the trans (i wanna keep the 4speed and PTO).
Thanks again! | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 477 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2001 Posts: 477 | i would like to use the original trans. p.t.o. etc., with the 327 bellhousing. the bellhousing has the rear engine mounts, and the tranny bolts to the bellhousing, with no mounts to it.
back to the question, does anyone make a set of engine mounts for a v-8 into a 1 1/2 ton truck? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Use the aftermarket side mount set-up and you'll be fine. I made my own back before I knew about the aftermarket stuff and it pretty much looks just like them. I used a bellhousing from a mid 70's V-8 truck and made an adapter mount to connect it to the crossmember, that way I could use the SM420 without reworking the driveshafts, Scott
If you look at the links in my signature line, the 48 4400 with the plow on is the one that has the 350 in it for about 8-9 years now. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 38 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 38 | I have a 1953 6500. I have a 1987 TBI 350 bolted to a 1965 bell housing, out of a c10 2wd. Then that is bolted to the original sm420. It worked great and I didn't even need to modify anything. I went to a junkyard and got a crossmember out of another c10 2wd. The whole combination is great!, now I am ready to bolt it in, so let me know if you have a questions or advice... | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | N. Phillips,
I have a question. This has been asked many times before...how did you address the steering box/exhaust manifold clearance issue?

Stuart He hasn't yet if I'm reading it correctly. The engines not in the truck yet if I'm not mistaken, Scott | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | Scott, You are correct...I start asking before I finish reading! He put a u joint in the steering column and moved the box over. Then he bent the drag link so it moved in original line of travel. Had to have a front cross member, 350 water pump, had to move brake pedal over an inch or so, had to hide the push button somewhere under the dash to activate the starter. He had it so sitting in the truck, or standing next to it, you'd think it had the stock six in it. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | Koolkar; You could use the front mount from a 60-62 V-8 powered chevy truck. You might need to grab the mounting perch off the front crossmember and attach it to your crossmember,or you might be able to just drill the two holes into your crossmember to fit the stock '62 mount. (haven't measured it all out, just an uneducated guess.) Speed | | |
