Had a 59 stepside and sold it some years ago, and have regretted it ever since.  Just purchased a beautiful original 58 stepside, and am contemplating changing rear end ratios as I go through the mechanicals. Has the stock 235 and three on the tree, and I see in some catalogs a 3:36 ring and pinion set. Would this be a mistake behind the 235 or do I leave the 3:90 in? All input gratefully accepted!

It made it very road worthy. The parts are pretty expensive though but I would rather keep it original than changing to a later rear end & modifying everything.

I have purchased a master setup kit, including 3.08 ring & pinion and Eaton posi unit that I plan to have installed in my '66, C-10 that has a factory 327cid/SM420 granny-low 4-speed and factory 3.73 posi. Any suggestions on a dependable, local mechanic that has the tools and know-how to do the swap? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | Richard - look around at good specialty rear end repair places - there's a place up here in Van BC called Rear Ends Only that has 338 gears for the TF rear in stock, as well as the original 390's - talked to'em a while back, and the prices for the 338 are the same as the 390! I'd bet there's someplace in FL similar
the other possibility is to find an original overdrive trans for the TF, which will give ya the highway speed at lower rpms, but still give the low speed pull these trucks do so well

I,m a bald headed old man & I,ll be in a 70 white Chev. step side pickup or black Skylark convertible.
