Well today the starter I bought at NAPA over six years ago finally gave up. For those interested, this foot stomp starter 1937-54, 139 tooth flywheel is #244-9651. It comes with a warranty, test sheet and with my core it was $71.58 out the door. Pretty good deal, available nationwide through them, so you would not have to ship one perhaps.

I picked up mine a Napa too. They had it in stock.

Did it not come with a lifetime warrantee as long as you own the vehicle? Seriously, I have the receipts from my 37 build and have "cashed in" on the warrantee a time or two. (built it 95-2000)


(They do give folks a lot of flack now. Lifetime warrantee's are not lifetime anymore depending on where you go! But heck, ya'll know that!)

Glad I saved starters over the years have a pile that should last out my needs. Local FLAPS stocked me up on small parts ,got 10 leather washers before they dried-up. Just put on one I rebuilt in 2011,last repair was in 82 put it on 12 volt then so they last well.

That same starter is 372 dollars Canadian for some unknown reason.Worth it to ship from USA

Kevinski After reding the above decided to see if starter parts were still out there. Brushes 3$ a set bushings 1.61$ each kick starter switch 29$ little steep there,have my 40's growler with a big yellow bug bulb in it so should be OK have cores .

Last Saturday I did the same with my ‘59 starter. In my case it’s the 235 engine, 168 teeth, 12V stomp starter. NAPA #91-01-3684. Traded in my old one for the core charge, net cost around $185. Took about a week to get it to the local branch.

Whew, I am truly blessed. For many years I've have a starter/generator/alternator repair shop within 15 miles of me and have great success with them.
The owner just recently retired and the three guys he trained are following in his foot steps. I always took biscuits by there and shoot the breeze with "Hugh".....Can't say enough about Hugh. He's been a friend and go to guy for years. Before opening his shop he worked for a company that rebuilt/reman them for the big box stores.
Yep, I'm one lucky guy......and to brag a little he rebuilt several for no charge.

To me he would say "you want it to work or look pretty".....I would say to work!! He'd say sit down and a cup of coffee...... and a short time later he'd put it back up on the counter. Not pretty but worked and the price is right. Last week the guys cleaned up my generator and put in new bushing for $20. I think its time to take them some more biscuits!!!!

OOOK, I'm through boasting!

I have a few parts brushes and bushings I ordered but they had a hard time getting them in,but I have them in my stash .

As long as I've got a lathe and a stick of bronze, bushings aren't going to be much of a problem. I can even get oilite on Ebay. It's surprising how many connecting rod, wrist pin, and piston combinations can be persuaded to work well together with a little machining!

Achipmunk Had an old generater guy train me up on alternators ,he really knew starters too ! He could recognize every american made starter nose in captivity iron or aluminum.

Achipmunck Was lucky enough to meet an old guy that rewound starters in 37,he was a warehouse of knowledge on all of it. I learned more about alternators from him than all the rest put together. He gave me a die in a tee handle to straighten core barrel bites on rotor shafts,still have it hanging right by my American made vise !!
