For helping keep this great

on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 86 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 86 | I was on my way to buy a 57 1 1/2 when what to my wondering eyes should appear but a '58 viking 60 with a dump bed. $800 later, it's mine! ( my future wife would have objected) Sheet metal & glass good except for the usual suspects. Been sitting for 5 years. The former owner said it has a 292. Is that right? Does anyone have any tips on getting it restarted right? Although it has a pull switch on the shift lever I'm thinking that is PTO and not a 2 speed rear. Clues?

If it's a wire or a vacuum hose then it is a 2 speed switch. Trace it back, see where it goes. The 292 didn't come out until about 62 but it could have been changed.
Sounds like you have a poor opinion of women, Matt. Too bad. There are lots who enjoy trucks. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Heck, my wife points them out for me. She accidentally sent me out to look at a nice clean truck that was for sale just to find out it was a Studebaker. My advice is buy the truck, love the truck, and find a woman who'll love you for all your "faults", and love her back.

My finance still loves me but the brake pedal goes to the floor. If I have to get a master cylinder, wheel cylinders or shoes where do I get them or where do I get rebiuild kits?

In alot of cases, the systems have just went dry, and a fill 'n bleed will get you stopping again.. but as i've learned from the helpful users here, those old brake systems are not sealed (which is why the fluid vanishes) and it lets in alot of air and moisture when they've been sitting for awhile.
That means that even tho a fill and bleed might give you solid brakes, and even tho the lines may look excellent.. they could be rotting from the inside.
A rotten from the inside line will look and work fine, till one day a big flake of rust stops up one of the cylinders, or blows out the line.
I reccomend replacing all the brake lines, regardless of how good they look.
