anybody buy a new set of 7.50-20 tires for their "BIG BOLT" lately? (set of six, rear duals) How hard are they to find, and how spendy?

When I was looking at tires the 7.50's were expensive. I think Coker was about the only source that I found at that time. I ended up going with the 8.25-20's and haven't had a problem with them. Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find, I have another one about due for tires. I would like to put the 7.50's on the front of the truck that doesn't have power steering,

Getting them through the local "Rayben" tire store.

Scott, you run 8.25's all the way around? Did you mount them on original wheels or not? My dad has a '62 60 series that he's going to part-out and it has some pretty decent rubber on it. 8.25 Goodyear fronts, and 8.25 co-op rears, all in fair condition. I'm "rebuilding" this truck, it's not as if I'm doing a "ground up" on it. I was just wondering if you guys were running into the $$$$ issue I was with 7.50's. I plan on using the original split rims.

Kieth - I found the 7.50's hard to get and expensive, but the 8.25/8.50's are common - ran'em all around on my 46 1.5T original rims and they worked great - might have prefered radials of that size, but the 8.25 nylon's I found were about 3% used and very reasonable price, so..... go for the ones you can get for a song! grin

Did you find your truck 'standing taller' with the 8.25/20's? With 7.50/20's mine fits in the garage (standard two car type) with not much headroom to spare. I'd like to get the new tires as mine, although driveable, are getting brittle and pieces break off the tread. I know that the bigger tires are cheaper around here too.

Thanks, George

I've always ran, no smaller than 8.25's, front & rear, on my Stovebolt Chevrolets. They fill the wheelwell better also. I had 9.00 X 20,s, on my '54 COE. I now have 8.25frt., & 9.00rr., on my '53 Chevy COE, & 9.00's frt., & rr., on my '52 GMC COE. I've got 10.00 X 20's on my, later model trucks.

Pakrat,
Now that you mention it, I did get a set of wheels off of a 6400 AD truck to get the one inch wider wheels. They should be realatively easy to get from a salvage yard. May want to see if your wheels are wide enough to mount 8.25's on first.

yes Geaorge, it is noticeably taller - didn't measure, but if you measure the height of yer current tires, then measure the height of some fairly new 8.25's that'll tell ya if it'll fit the garage - if you only got inches, it might not work! eek but you could always let some air out when you get home, and fill'em again when you go out! grin

I have a retired firefighter with about 50 tires in a store room that he mentioned "he wanting to get rid of." He donated seven tires to me for the 1951 fire truck. The tires are brand new Pirelli radial tires size 8.25/20R's. Question: how much does it cost to ship tires of this size? If anyone is interested, I'll call him this week and see if he still wants to get rid of the tires.

Virginiafiretruck,

I am also interested in some tires if they are available. The tires on my 1964 Chevy C60 are 9.00 x 20's, but the rim indicates a standard size of 8.25 x 20. I would definitely pay for the shipping to Colorado if he has some that are still available...

Thanks, in advance!!

Here is the scoop: I went to his shop this morning and he has about 60 of the tires in a store room. They are all mounted on a F**D rims with intertubes. He said he wants $40 each for them. Anyone still interested?

Virginiafiretruck,

Yes, I am still interested. As you indicated the tires are new, so $40 for a brand new tire is a deal. Would the tires be removed from the F**d rims? Does the price include the tubes? Will he pallet them and arrange for shipping (of course customer pays shipping)? One last question, can you (or he) provide a couple of quick pictures of a typical tire? (Sorry...I never buy anything sight unseen).

Thanks much for investigating...

I'll check with him and post a reply and I'll shoot a couple of digital photos so you can see what they look like. FYI: I have to work 24 hours on Tuesday so it will be Wednesday before I can get it done.

As I wrote before, I have seven of the tires and the tubes are included as are the rims. I think they are really worth it but I'm not much of a tire guy. I think you'll like what you see when I get you the photos.

Question how many tires would you want and do you have any idea of the shipping costs to your location? I know they are heavy as I loaded seven in my F-150 supercrew and was tired and dirty when I finished. I don't the weight but I'll look into it.

No idea what the shipping would be...that would depend on the weight of all tires (I would want 7...6 for the truck and a spare) and rims and the pallet from origination to destination (Colorado Springs). Obviously I'd have them trucked out the cheapest way possible because time is a luxury I can afford.

This seems like one of those deals that "are too good to be true"? How did he end up with 50+ tires on F**d rims anyhow...if you don't mind my asking?

I looked everywhere on the web and haven't been successful finding what a Pirelli 8.25x20R looks like...so the final approval will hinge on what the tires look like...but it seems very promising smile smile

Thanks for doing the leg work on this!!!

Hey I would be intrested is 6 tires. grin I have a '48 6100 with 7.50's in the front and 8.25's in the rear. But am I correct in assumming that the 8.25's would work in the front?

How he ended up with 70+ tires: He had some type of contract to build portable power generator trailers but the contract was cancelled after all the matterial had arrived. That is what his company builds: huge enclosed power platforms for businesses. Anyway the tires arrived but the contract was cancelled and he is left with all the equipment. Tires are the only parts left as there isn't much you can do with that size tire.

BTW: The tires fit on the front of my 1951 chevy 6400 series fire truck too. I've heard clearance problems on the Stovebolt web site but I haven't had a problem with it myself.

Some of you asked for photos of the tires. I went to the shop this morning and took these:

The retired firefighter who has the tires was in a meeting, so I didn't get the chance to speak directly with him. Look at the photos and let me know what you want to do.

I have a '39 ton and a half which had 32x6 tires on it. What size tires would work for this (I would prefer a little larger tires in the rear) without straying from originality?

O.K., here's how it needs to go down! We find a carrier to go from VA Beach, to Winnipeg, and hit all points in between. smile The carrier loads 31 tires in VA Beach, he drops 7 in Columbia,MO for GMC, delivers a half dozen to Scott in IA., 6 more for me in Butterfield, MN., Baja in St. Cloud gets another 6, and we wind up with Jarge in Winnipeg getting the remainder. Sounds wild but with a little team work I think it might work. grin You guys know any over the road drivers that make something similar to that route? If somebody knows someone who makes that route regularly, maybe they could swing 6 or 7 at a time and hit a different stop each time instead of taking all of them at once. Wishful thinking? I know a few truckers, and truckers like cash! grin

The ATHS Annual Convention will be in Auburn, Indiana this June...guys will be coming from all corners of the USA and Canada. If one of the VA guys took them there they could be relayed to a town near you! Sounds good on paper and it could just work...

I count 26 tires wanted depending on shipping plus 6 that are going to be picked up locally. I'll drive down there and see how much the tires weigh and figure out how I can get them packaged to be shipped. I'll let you know what I find out.

Hey Virginia, if you can, get some specs. on the wheels. I know you said they're ford but what do they fit? What's the bolt pattern? If this works out we'll all have 6 or 7 wheels sitting around that we might be able to sell and get back a little of the purchase/shipping cost. wink

I can't tell for sure, but looking at the pictures posted here, the rims look like Accuride open face rims, which will fit any truck with Dayton Hubs. They would have to be remounted on disc. type rims, for use on our older Advance Design, & earlier trucks.

Would the offset on a set of rims for 750's be enough for clearence on 825's so they wouldn't rub on duals? Va Beach only about 2 hrs from here so transport not a problem

The 8.25s used the same wheel as the 7.50s originally (6" width, 5.375" offset), so there shouldn't be a problem. 6.5" wheels with 5.625" offset were available as an option for the 8.25s, and were mandatory for the 9.00 tire option.

I'm leaving in about 15 minutes to go down to the shop to look at the tires and weigh them too. Here is a data and size chart of the tires with some info too. You want the 19th line down from the top of the chart:

http://www.yokohamatire.com/tbs_tire_detail.asp?TireID=42

It gives the size, weight and dimensions of the tires on the chart in the proper size. I’ll shoot photos of the rims too.

The tire/rim combination weighs: 169 lbs each. You can figure shipping costs. For anyone who wants to pick them up, you can send me an email and we'll get the date and time set up. For those folks, it should be easy. I'm still trying to figure out how I could package and ship six or seven of the rim/tire sets.

That doesn't sound like fun, but we'll see how it works out.
