I think Coker was about the only source that I found at that time. I ended up going with the 8.25-20's and haven't had a problem with them. Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find, I have another one about due for tires. Did you mount them on original wheels or not? My dad has a '62 60 series that he's going to part-out and it has some pretty decent rubber on it. 8.25 Goodyear fronts, and 8.25 co-op rears, all in fair condition. I'm "rebuilding" this truck, it's not as if I'm doing a "ground up" on it. I was just wondering if you guys were running into the $$$$ issue I was with 7.50's. I plan on using the original split rims.

Did you find your truck 'standing taller' with the 8.25/20's? With 7.50/20's mine fits in the garage (standard two car type) with not much headroom to spare. I'd like to get the new tires as mine, although driveable, are getting brittle and pieces break off the tread. I know that the bigger tires are cheaper around here too.

They fill the wheelwell better also. I had 9.00 X 20,s, on my '54 COE. I now have 8.25frt., & 9.00rr., on my '53 Chevy COE, & 9.00's frt., & rr., on my '52 GMC COE. They should be realatively easy to get from a salvage yard. May want to see if your wheels are wide enough to mount 8.25's on first. He donated seven tires to me for the 1951 fire truck. The tires are brand new Pirelli radial tires size 8.25/20R's. Question: how much does it cost to ship tires of this size? The tires on my 1964 Chevy C60 are 9.00 x 20's, but the rim indicates a standard size of 8.25 x 20. I would definitely pay for the shipping to Colorado if he has some that are still available... Thanks, in advance!! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 | Here is the scoop: I went to his shop this morning and he has about 60 of the tires in a store room. They are all mounted on a F**D rims with intertubes. He said he wants $40 each for them. Anyone still interested? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 187 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 187 | Virginiafiretruck,
Yes, I am still interested. As you indicated the tires are new, so $40 for a brand new tire is a deal. Would the tires be removed from the F**d rims? Does the price include the tubes? Will he pallet them and arrange for shipping (of course customer pays shipping)? One last question, can you (or he) provide a couple of quick pictures of a typical tire? (Sorry...I never buy anything sight unseen).
Thanks much for investigating... | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 | I'll check with him and post a reply and I'll shoot a couple of digital photos so you can see what they look like. FYI: I have to work 24 hours on Tuesday so it will be Wednesday before I can get it done.
As I wrote before, I have seven of the tires and the tubes are included as are the rims. I think they are really worth it but I'm not much of a tire guy. I think you'll like what you see when I get you the photos.
Question how many tires would you want and do you have any idea of the shipping costs to your location? I know they are heavy as I loaded seven in my F-150 supercrew and was tired and dirty when I finished. I don't the weight but I'll look into it. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 187 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 187 | Virginiafiretruck No idea what the shipping would be...that would depend on the weight of all tires (I would want 7...6 for the truck and a spare) and rims and the pallet from origination to destination (Colorado Springs). Obviously I'd have them trucked out the cheapest way possible because time is a luxury I can afford. This seems like one of those deals that "are too good to be true"? How did he end up with 50+ tires on F**d rims anyhow...if you don't mind my asking? I looked everywhere on the web and haven't been successful finding what a Pirelli 8.25x20R looks like...so the final approval will hinge on what the tires look like...but it seems very promising Thanks for doing the leg work on this!!! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 13 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 13 | Virginiafiretruck Hey I would be intrested is 6 tires. I have a '48 6100 with 7.50's in the front and 8.25's in the rear. But am I correct in assumming that the 8.25's would work in the front? Scott | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 | How he ended up with 70+ tires: He had some type of contract to build portable power generator trailers but the contract was cancelled after all the matterial had arrived. That is what his company builds: huge enclosed power platforms for businesses. Anyway the tires arrived but the contract was cancelled and he is left with all the equipment. Tires are the only parts left as there isn't much you can do with that size tire.
BTW: The tires fit on the front of my 1951 chevy 6400 series fire truck too. I've heard clearance problems on the Stovebolt web site but I haven't had a problem with it myself. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | Va.firetruck, I called, & left you a message, at the number you left me. We find a carrier to go from VA Beach, to Winnipeg, and hit all points in between. The carrier loads 31 tires in VA Beach, he drops 7 in Columbia,MO for GMC, delivers a half dozen to Scott in IA., 6 more for me in Butterfield, MN., Baja in St. Cloud gets another 6, and we wind up with Jarge in Winnipeg getting the remainder. Sounds wild but with a little team work I think it might work. You guys know any over the road drivers that make something similar to that route? If somebody knows someone who makes that route regularly, maybe they could swing 6 or 7 at a time and hit a different stop each time instead of taking all of them at once. Wishful thinking? I know a few truckers, and truckers like cash!

I know you said they're ford but what do they fit? What's the bolt pattern? If this works out we'll all have 6 or 7 wheels sitting around that we might be able to sell and get back a little of the purchase/shipping cost.

Here is a data and size chart of the tires with some info too. You want the 19th line down from the top of the chart: http://www.yokohamatire.com/tbs_tire_detail.asp?TireID=42 It gives the size, weight and dimensions of the tires on the chart in the proper size. I’ll shoot photos of the rims too. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 1,602 | The tire/rim combination weighs: 169 lbs each. You can figure shipping costs. For anyone who wants to pick them up, you can send me an email and we'll get the date and time set up. For those folks, it should be easy. I'm still trying to figure out how I could package and ship six or seven of the rim/tire sets. That doesn't sound like fun, but we'll see how it works out.
