One thing always leads to another. While I was under the 54 getting the clutch disc unstuck from the flywheel I decided to replace the speedometer cable that I had sitting on the bench for many months... The end of the cable that goes into the transmission has sheered off into that gear and I can find no way to get it out... Are these gears hard to find? Does anyone know where to start looking? Thank you

I also had the same issue. I used a strong magnet and got it out.

So, we got the end of the cable out and installed the gear back into the transmission and the new cable into the gear. When I am in 1st (for 10 feet), 2nd or 3rd gear the cable seams to work fine. When I put it in 4th it sends the needle to 100 and you can hear the square cable going crazy inside the round metal housing that it is in??? So we unhooked it and now I would like to know how to get it to work. It has never worked since I got the truck but I thought it would be really nice to have a working speedometer. I'm sure I can only do about 45 wide open in 4th gear but it would still be cool. Please pass along any ideas of what I might be able to do. Also the gear is a 13 tooth gear. Thank again guys!

lube the shaft with graphite. Check the outer housing for kinks, crushed spots and any damage. Make sure there aren't any real sharp bends in the routing.

Its not so much the noise that bothers me it is the fact that I'm going to break the cable again or maybe the speedo if it keeps going to 100mph in 4th gear while I'm really doing about 45mph?? Thank you!

Transmission may not be original may need to change Speedo gears

You may need to lube the speedometer. See if it turns easily on the bench.

I had to back off a bit and slightly loosened the connection to the tyranny. It goes kinda nuts when the connection is screwed down too tigh.

The cable is likely to long like Wally found, try backing off the connector or adding a spacer between the cable housing and the gear housing. Also make sure the housing is square to the speedometer and gear housing. As a test, pull the cable off the transmission and hook an electric drill to it. Have someone watch the speedometer when you speed up the drill, if the speedometer sets steady, you have a cable length, cable housing, or lack of lubrication problem. If the speedometer is erratic, you need to clean and lubricate it.

A long cable pushes on the speedometer head and messes with the magnetic drive. If in fact it shows 100 mph, then odometer should show 10 miles every 6 minutes.
