I picked up a 49 chevy 6400 flatbed a week or so ago. I have not been able to look it over real good because I work on a remote island in alaska.
I have found vin number info. but have been trying to determine what type of engine I have in it. the wife got the s/n number next to the distributer, it is 0668479F54Y, I am having her look for casting numbers off the block, and she has not found them yet. she found the casting numbers of the head 3701887. the little I have found it looks like this engine might be a rebuild of a couple differant years. Can anyone help me confirm this?

The "F54Y" indicates that you have a 1954 235ci inline 6, a good year most would say, due to the pressurized lubrication system.
That's what my book says,
Scott

that was what I thought the f54y might be the first set of numbers had me thrown. Also the head casting number seems to have come off a 53. Is there anything I might need to know about this combanation, Parts, valve adjusting, ect.?

thanks for the reply.

My book doesn't list the casting numbers, just the stamped "I.D." numbers from the factory. There are many fellow bolters that have this info and I'm sure they will be along shortly. As far as your parts compatability, I've never done the mix-n-match thing with the inlines before, so I can't help you there either. There will be someone that has along soon I'm sure.
Good luck with your fine truck,
Scott

Thanks Scot,

Its looking like a mix and match so far, not being there to confirm all the numbers myself makes it diffacult. I'll wait to here form some others.

Thanks for the tip, picture's comeing soon I hope.
Not at location of truck at this time, only have one picture of truck to date. Large file. New to site and got to get things figured out. Trail and error, I hate reading the instructions. Last resort if to many parts are left over and it don't run, than ya read them.
