Based on my experience with my '42 and '37, as the mechanism wears, the steel axle of the wheel that moves the tongue wallows out the hole in the aluminum body. This causes the gears to not mesh properly and causes wear of the gears. To restore the assembly you have to start with fixing that wallowed out hole in the body.
A friend help fix the mechanism of my '42 by making an aluminum bushing for the axle and then milling a hole for the bushing in the body. We couldn't do much for the wear on the gears but it re-aligned the gears so they now mesh properly and the crank functions much better. There is still a little slop in the crank due to the previous wear of the gears.
If you search the internet you will find restored assemblies on Ebay, as well as someone who has made new aluminum castings of the body. I don't know if either one makes new gear sets.
