I've had mustangs and vintage Volkswagens that I've built and sold over the years but never pulled the trigger on a "farm truck". I grew up as a kid around the 80's and 90's street rod scene and always had an affinity for the 30's to 50's trucks but never really considered owning one; until this weekend when I finally caved in and picked up my first pre-war vehicle. It's a relatively stock 1940 Chevy pickup that was supposedly restored sometime in the 70's.

Look forward to gleaming volumes of knowledge from the forum around these old trucks.

Welcome to the “Bolt”! Great looking truck and really nice condition to start with. What are your plans for the old gal?

Ahhh, nice truck. Welcome to the Stovebolt. We have many members here and I'll bet lots of them are from across the border. Watch for them. May be a bolter next door.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Thanks for the kind welcome. Plans for the truck are settling into place after much thought and internal debate. Ultimately it's going to be a mellow jump in and drive it anywhere type rig

Style:
Ride height and stance are going to stay as they are, I'm a big fan of slightly lowered vehicles but there is something about the way this truck sits that resonates with me. Paint color will likely be boatswain blue (or a close as I can get to it) body and black fenders on solid rims. Going for an original look and feel type vibe that suites the truck

Electronics:
I ordered a new wiring harness for the truck and will be converting it to 12V

Drivetrain:
The 216 the 3spd trans needs to be rebuilt and combined with the torque tube rear all 3 are on the chopping block at this point. I've toyed with a 235/T5 and 10 bolt or 8.8 rear, a 235/original 3spd and torque tube with 3.55 rears gears but at the end of the day I'm pretty sure it will be a mild SBC/auto and 10bolt or 8.8 rear. I'll be converting to disk brakes up front and possibly on all 4 corners depending on which rear end it's running.

Still have lots of reading and thinking to do before ripping into the truck but I'm getting more comfortable with my direction

Cheers

Looks like the third picture was taken at the Brentwood Bay ferry terminal.

It was indeed the Brentwood ferry. The truck was in north saanich and I considered brining it home over the malahat but figured the ferry would be a safer bet.

I would drive it for a season before tearing it apart and you might never get into it!

That would be an ideal situation but the 30min drive home proved that the truck burned more oil than gas, and the oil that doesn't turn to smoke ends up in a puddle on the ground.
