engine(36,000miles)purred like a kitten when removed. Would like to raise its H.P. a little. I am interested in getting the body
& chassis completely done before more $ outlay
on engine. I have a rebuilt 700R4 in shrink wrap

Are you saying you have the engine, tranny, and rearend and are looking for a truck to put it all in? With just that information I would go to Ebay and see about buying something there.
With more input here you will get more output.

If I remember correctly the heads don't breath well, which will limit the impact of any other changes.
I'd replace the cam and intake and try to create a free flowing exhaust. Any more than that, and you would probably be better off starting with a 350.
I recently saw a 290 horse crate 350 for less than $2,000. I doubt your 305 would approach that for less money.
