My '56 has a 350 engine with Edelbrock carb. I need to put a kit in it but don't know how to ID the carb. Can't find a tag. Do I need to know what it is or are the kits all the same?

If I do need to ID it where do I look?

I don't know how to ID an Edelbrock, but I'll give you my "this is what I would do" advice. I would get an old Quadrajet from a 350ci GM and rekit it. Quad's have their number stamped on the side so you can get a kit everytime it needs it. I'm just a little partial to the Quad since they adjust and rebuild so easy.

Nice meeting you last week-end too!

The number should be stamped in the base flange on the front of the carb.

Thanks chuckthetruck. I had tried to ID it by that number on google but it turned up nothing. I finally figured out just use the first 4 digits.

Scott, thanks for the suggestion. I have a Q-jet from my '83 Jimmy I forgot to take back for my core deposit in time. After seeing the price of an Edelbrock kit, I'm considering it. I don't suppose you know if it needs an adapter to fit an Edelbrock manifold, do you?

Cletis, If you rebuild the Q-jet you might want to pick up the book Carbking recommended "How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors" by Cliff Ruggles. Excellent book the guy really knows what he is talking about. The book will tell you how to setup the Jimmy carb for your 56.

The Edelbrock carb is basically a Carter AFB. They are easy to rebuild & drive real good. The gas mileage is not as good as the Q-jet.

Will Carter would not like to read the above.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

INSTALLING A QUARAJUNK ON YOUR ELDEBROCK MANIFOLD WILL REQUIRE AN ADAPTER. (GREATLY KNOWN FOR ADDITIONAL VACUUM LEAKS)SECONDLY THE Q-JET IS CONSIDERABLY MORE COMPLICATED TO REBUILD AND TUNE. PRICE OF ADAPTER + Q-JET KIT COMPARED TO EDELBROCK CARB KIT????

I think the Quadrajets are a pretty good carb. The thing that screws them up the most is that the shafts wear into the housings and the housings need to be rebushed with a kit. Without it they are mostlikely be a poor performer and have dead spots through the rpm range. If you can't tune a Carter AFB, you might not be able to tune an Edelbrock. Bolting them on is not tuning.

Cletis,
Should be a 4 digit number on the left front flange right where it bolts to the manifold. My 600 cfm says 1479. I have a list of the Edelbrock numbers.

Q-jets also wear out the secondary metering jets. These are not replacable so if they are oblong the carb is junk. Also look for worn metering rods. This carb is very tuneable and can be mounted to Edelbrock intake.I have a Perfomer and it is a direct bolt on.Good Luck
