I passed on the smaller rusty 1958 3800 truck and went with this truck. This truck will be a food truck with the foodservice going on top of the flatbed. Weight in the bed will be 1-2 tons. I am trying to decide between a 454 or LS 6.0. I have other GM trucks/cars/boats with either LS/SBC/Detroit Diesel. This truck will need to run on e85 so LS swap with a flex-fuel sensor or 454 with bumped up compression and EFI. The seller said that this truck has a 6.72 gear. It is a 2-speed axle. Straight 6 with 4 speed that is coming out if anyone wants one.

Your stock 2-speed rear will have 6.40/8.72 to 1 ratio.

It might be easier to move the cab to a modern chassis that's already got the engine, trans and rear you want. You would also get newer rims/tires. Maybe a Kodiak...measure the front axle and start looking...

Just a thought...

I found these 19.5 x 6x8.75 wheels from a modern Isuzu. Would this fit and replace my split rim tube wheels?

your Viking has 22.5 wheels, 19.5 wheels will look small in the opening. If you look around, you should be able to find some 22.5 wheels used from a moving van or some other truck.

If economy is of any concern then the LS is the hands down choice. Torque is about the same for both and the LS has more horsepower. If you don't already have an engine you might check out the LQ which I believe is a truck version of the LS. I have no experience with E85 but on the 10% alcohol the LS gets right at double the mileage of a 454.

I found original 22.5 budd tubeless wheels. I want to use this V8 Crossmember. In the photo it looks like the engine cross memeber mounts behind the factory engine cross member? Has anyone ever used this?

That cross member might work...depending on what transmission are you going to use? You also might have to remove the existing bell housing cross member and then fabricate a new one as that cross member also stabilizes the frame at the spring hanger.

The easiest swap might be a 350 SBC and keep the existing transmission...all you would need would be a V8 bell housing, V8 throttle linkage and V8 front motor mounts. The SBC can handle higher rpm so the truck can run faster.

I used one of those for the engine on my 59 Suburban, along with the factory V-8 bellhousing and rear mounts. It worked fine but, I should have just bought the front V-8 mounts and been done with it. If your V-8 does not have holes in the front for the original style mounts, then this is a great alternative.

Got a question, did you have to re-route the brake lines after installing that crossmember? From what I've seen and read, the brackets for that crossmember come close to where the lines run through the frame rails.

I got an LS (LQ4 6.0) and 4L80E for $575 along with 6 original 22.5 Tubeless Budd wheels. I am waiting on the tubular LS cross member kit to come in.

6.0 LS Engine Chevy Viking Swap

22.5 Tubeless Budd Wheels - 1958 Originals

Once I get the engine and transmission in, I'll be able to add modern 22.5 tires and this truck will be good to drive anywhere.

J Apache Nice truck those Apache's were tough,Once built a 500 gallon spray truck for row crop work if you didn't let out of it would go thru about 8 inches of clay mud in a wet place with a full load of corn spray on. Those tall narrow wheels and tires worked. 327 with sm 420.
