If you absolutely must be barbaric and run a carb on a newer engine, they make intake manifolds for the job. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 305 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 305 | have to use what i have in the garage on a budget

A few minor things...
You'll need the earlier perimter bolt valve covers to match the heads. Obviously, the center bolt one won't work.
There likely won't be a threaded port in the earlier heads for the temperature sending unit that the late model engine will have. It depends on the age of the heads. Even if it does have the threaded hole, it will be the wrong size. They went to a smaller hole in the early 80's. From 1/2 NPT to 3/8 if I remember correctly. The point is, you'll have to figure out another place to mount your temp sending unit.
Lastly, any accesory drive brackets won't work. The early heads don't have the tapped holes in the ends for the brackets to screw into like a later model application uses.

If they are not drilled and tapped for your accessories, that could be a major problem for you. I have a set of 1960 283 heads with the same problem. Can't use them on anything I have currently.

Now we have Vortec heads which outflow almost everything and make the Camel Hump heads look antique. Someday the aftermarket will develop something that'll make the Vortec's look like ancient history.

Don't know how much power you want to make, but I have these heads on my 400 and it has dyno'ed over 450 H.P. If that is flowing like crap, so be it. I used a Carter 825 Cfm carb for the dyno runs on a Corvette high rise manifold. The combination ran middle 11 sec. in 1/4 mi. drags back in the early '70's in a 1966 El Camino | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 90 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 90 | Beware of the camel humps, if they don't have hardened seats. Without them this unleaded gas will burn up your exhaust valves in just a short time. the machine shop here charges 350.00 to install hardened seats. At that cost ya might as use your late model heads----just my opinion I also ran camel humps on my oval track car in the 70"S and 80's, we used av-gas and addative to keep the valves cooler. I liked to mix 1 gallon of diesel to 10 gallons of av-gas. With today's gas, it doesn't make sense not to do that.

It kept the valves alive and as a side benefit,it seemed to bring my octane rating up a grade. I still use it,and it still works that way. Speed | | |
