I want to A/C my '51 Chevy 1/2 ton. Does anyone have a picture of a vintage A/C evaporator actually mounted under the dash? I'm really dragging my feet on this one, was trying to hold off till Spring Carlisle that I might see one there, but it's still a month away and I'm chomping at the bit. There is Vintage, Old Air, Hotrod Air, Etc., I'm looking for the best less intrusive fit. The brochures do not show the under dash fit on any.

Sorry, Zeke, I spent some time searching the web, but all I see are the photos of the dash and the small square vents. I can't even find a clear photo of how the controls look on a Stovebolt dash. They really are "hidden installations," I guess.

Anyone have one of these installed and willing to crawl under the dash with a camera?

Have you checked out Southern Air They have some pretty nice looking units. Joe

i've got one of their pieces of s**t units in my COE.
stick with Vintage air or Air-tique.
airtique would be my 1st choice based on quality with V/A being a close second.

yep, ALL of the above!
Instructions were incomplete,customer service from the owner himself was a joke,foam came off the mode door,got "yeah,we've had a problem with that" and then he walked away.
has very litte air volume so it BARELY cools it cab, heat!?!?! sorta, goes back to the airflow problem.fit? well it was one of their maxcool top of the line units.crap unit and supposedly they make their own, at least thats what the owner said.
moral of the story?
don't buy "cheap" like i did.

I finally found my way here -- Stinkin_V8 at Hotrodders.com sent me to get some answers to somethin' that wasn't gettin' much attention at Hotrodders -- this is a great place to be!

I just installed the Hurricane AC/Heat/Defrost unit from Old Air in my '54 ... the install was fairly easy, instructions were great, and the unit works like a Hurricane! 3-speed blower, temp control, defrost and/or heat control, and a plenum that hugs the line of the bottom of the dash perfectly! I am tickled pink. The heater pumps more heat than I ever dreamed of and the AC pumps more cold than I ever thought it would. What more?

The interior unit (I guess that's the evaporator?) sits right behind the 4" firewall hole ... you do NOT see it like you do the original heater, which is just above the passenger's feet. You definitely loose some of the glove box, but nothing worth crying over. I'm gonna buy a new glove box (they're only $11) and do some measuring for different depths, left to right, and customize it to fit so I'll get as much space in there as possible -- the right side of the glove box is where I've lost the most ... it might only go 3-4 inches deep there, whereas, on the left side I may have only lost 3-4 inches in depth.

If you want specific pictures, let me know and I'll do it for ya.

PS - I freelance building web sites for people like AT&T and World Gym to supplement my musical income, which is sporatic ... you know ... "ridin' shotgun in April ... shot down in May" - how does that song go?

Thanks for the info I think I will go the Old Air route. I also saw your post on the filler neck and door location, I have the 31 gal tank mounted and was wondering where I was going to exit/intake the filler, My bed is not on yet, I hope to paint the cab this weekend after the @#*&$ patch panels,filling, sanding, & blocking, I should have replaced that cab it seems it has more patch panels than old metal.. I also know the pain of the 3-4 weeks of RAIN. Zeke

How did it go with the cab this weekend? Got any new pics?

No new pic's but more sanding, the base coat didn't lay right, went on too dry & rough, I could blame the New HVLP gun, the fact that I have no paint booth, etc.,but it was the shooter. NOW I read MartinSr's post on HVLP gun adjustment. Base coat is to expensive for mistakes, but I wet sanded with 400, got it smooth, have a good foundation coat, will just wet it down with the final top coat. This base does not cover well, very translucent. Sealer went on gr-e-a-t that's cause it's cheap. Zeke
