Well folks - about 8 years ago I was on here often in a desperate attempt to restore my '46 1/2 ton, but in the end I had to accept that the truck was too far gone for my abilities and wallet and I was forced to give up. The truck came from NY and was rusted out and the engine was stuck solid.

Fast forward 8 years and I continued to read all the original manuals and books about these old trucks and have continued to surf eBay and Craigslist to see what might be out there. Now I at least knew what I was looking for and what to stay away from and I also realized that I will have to pay more up front as to not fail at this again.

I finally purchased '46 (possibly '47) from AZ yesterday. A very original and solid truck that appears not to have been molested too much in the past. It comes with a clear title, but unfortunately the title is based on a VIN tag that is not original to the truck. I was looking forward to deciphering the VIN and get all of the cool historic data, but oh well....


Be prepared for lots of questions, but I will do my best to not upset any of the "expert" members and consult with the shop/owners manual prior to posting here. I remember that some of the answers I received years ago were rather unhelpful and discouraging, but hopefully that was just me.

......I've been around here longer than I care to admit, even longer than the 2001 in my signature, and sorry you felt we were unhelpful and discouraging . Yeah, we have a few that "wonder around aimless" now and then but for the most part there are many many many great guys here willing to go out of their way to help. Give it a little time and you can figure out the tares from the wheat.
Glad to have you aboard. Just post questions in the most appropriate garage forum and we'll do the rest.
There are also many bolters around your area so watch for folks location when you read the post. Your also close to where the Stovebolt Homecoming is held each year late April.

Do you have a clear title? I wasn't quite sure from your comment. Hope there are no problems there for you.

I believe in you! I had to learn hard, sell cheap, buy again and then I succeeded and finished my truck. It’s a long, hard road but I get a huge grin driving, looking at the truck , or thinking about driving it! You can do it too! We are here to make sure it was a one time thing. As to asking questions and receiving information, I usually try the search feature first and then if I don't get everything I am looking for I ask away. No one should give anyone a hard time for asking a question no mater how many times it has come up in the past. Everyone is here to help each other out That's what has made this great site unlike any other.
I look forward to hearing more about your truck and seeing more pictures too! Shes a beauty.

I do have a clear title! What I was trying to say is that the original VIN plate is gone and at some point someone attached a “replacement” VIN tag to the truck that is definitely not a 1/2 ton tag. VIN it is ADCA592179.
It’s fine and I’m glad I have a clear title, but I really would have enjoyed knowing what year and month it was assembled, at what plant and at what production number.
Title also states that it is a ‘47, which is possible, but who knows. Maybe I’ll be able to figure out the details in some other way.

Welcome. I understand where you are coming from in regards to now having the knowledge to start over now that you have the experience of your first attempted build. I love my truck but it would have been nice to have the knowledge when I bought it that I do now after 3 years of working on it.

I would not have made it as far as I have without this group and all the help they have provide.

In regards to your truck. OMG! it is GREAT. I have a 54 but I really love the art deco styling of the 40's era trucks. It is your build but I would be working on the mechanics (brakes, drive train and engine keeping it original) and call it done. Would you be interested in selling it?

Yes- my “build” if you can even call it that would be to just make mechanically solid and leave everything original or change it back to original if necessary.
I will probably just put some protection/clear coat over the old paint and leave it alone at least for a while.

Yes- that will be my next step and I have my hopes up!

Well if someone could convince me that the cab lights were in fact period options/available accessories, I might just leave them on

My 46 2 ton has them.
And they look the same.
