Yet more paint it myself stuff. I got it painted and I thought it looked pretty good but the ever present critics that hang out in my shop said nooooooo you have to now sand it with 2000 grit and buff it. I began sanding it yesterday morning about 9 AM and finished about 5 PM with my arms hanging limp useless at my sides. I could just barely lift a Point Special to my parched lips. Anyway critics now say not sanded good enough. Since all these guys just hang out and never actually do anything I am asking for advice from anyone who has gone through this excersize. Just how " good" does the sanding have to be before buffing and why. Anyone? Martinsr? Weeds

Weeds,

It took three of us working a 10-hour day to Color Sand the exterior of my Suburban.

We painted with a two-part single-stage urethane enamal (PPG Concept DCC).

As suggested at the link above, we started with 1000 grit and progressed through 1500 and finally 2000 grit. Then, the surface was power-buffed with a buffing compound. The final step (done later) was to polish with a hand glaze (some people used a good carnuba wax).

It takes time and patience but you can get a mirror-like finish.

By the way, if your friends recommended that you start with 2000 grit, they caused you to do a lot of extra work.

Tim

Maybe try the "Tom Sawyer" approach, and put them to work.
