I am about ready to put the 1/8" pinstripe tape on and would like to hear how you guys did it....what works, what doesn't. I guess I would like to hear how you kept it straight, best place to start, things like that.

I have never applied one before and it always helps me when I hear what others have done.

Thanks wave
Chuck

I can't help you but know for sure that someone here will. Beautiful truck you have there and I think this photo needs to be on the 'Bolt homepage someday.

Don,
Thanks for your kind words, especially about my youngest, Sarah. She is a constant companion with me in the garage and the local cruise scene.

My truck pales in comparison to your BEAUTIFUL resto...fantastic work there. I am just getting mine back together as well. I have been working on it all year....not enough hours in the day. The pictures you see are before work started and I will have some new ones posted soon.

Now if I only could get movin on that pinstripe.....

Chuck

Chuck,

We used 1/8" pinstripe tape made by 3M. I's about 1" wide and you place it on the cab a little off the center line of the cab "belt" (if you want to know the location, I 'll have to go look). Run it inside the door frames (turn the corner and go in about an inch).

After the tape is in place, your remove the 1/8" center strip and you are ready to paint.

If you are good, you could do it like the pros (and as it was originally done) - by brush. Or, there are special applicator tools - Eastwoods and others sell them.

Are you going to try to do the wheels, also?

Tim,
I am using the vinyl pinstripe on a roll with adhesive back....no painting involved. I don't think I ever had that steady of a hand to paint with a brush or that dohicky that Eastwoods sells.

So when using this "ready-made" pinstripe...do I continue the stripe around the corners of doors and cowl...or do they end flush with edges

UPDATE....well I went ahead and started on the passenger door and found a couple of things....the roll of pinstripe that I had was not straight....every 6" or 7" it would get out of shape like the roll of tape was smashed or something. I tried about 10' of this and it looked like I put it on drunk. I also didn't like the color (cream beige) on my new paint...so no pinstripe for me.

Blue,
Dont get discouraged yet !
get a fresh roll ..make sure it hasnt been damaged ..
Try agin !
Now im NO expert but have done a lot of the tape .
First deside where you are to start ...then make sure you give an inch at start to trim an wrap or cut off clean with with the body line ..it up too you ...biggest thing with tape to avoid the DRUNKEN SAILOR ...is too say ya doin a door ..is too make your start point an take off the backing for the whole door ..
keeping your tape taught but not stretchin it is the key ..
you will see how it will lay down ..an just get it straight ..i have found that a partner is great ..get it straight an why you hold the line in check have them run it down with a cloth ..
give it a try an experiment .dont let a bad roll discourage ya !

Next time I will have my wife help me and am going to look at different colos too....even though this is the "correct" color, I didn't care for it....I will see what else is out there. Thanks for the tips.

In 1955, Bombay Ivory replaced Cream Medium as the stripe color. Maybe you'd like that better.

I did this on my 1966 Mustang years ago where the tape had two inner narrow stripes that you removed once you had the wider tape totally installed. Then they gave you a bottle of paint with a brush to apply. Worked like a champ. I now have a 1949 custom cab and have the tape to do the pinstripe. Will try this winter. Hopefully with the same success!

Go to a paint store they usualy have a magnetic roll about 1/2 inch wide and as long as any car lay it down on the car as a guide and it makes laying the real stripe alot easier Real pinstripers use thes so they can pop them out fast but im sure if u took a weekend u could get it some times a little brew will help calm the nerves too

I just got a new Eastwoods and saw the magnetic roll in a kit...seems like a great idea and something I can do....especially if I am able to calm my nerves first!!!

If you want a pro, give a pinstripper a call and see what he will charge. I had mine done for under a $100 for all four. This picture came out dark, but you get the idea. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2097104160032470346whhdQx
He did it all free hand, unbeliveable.

I used the vinyl tape on mine and really like it. It would be easy to change colors someday if I get tired of whats on it.

I started on the door and matched the hood and cab to it. Stick the tape on the edge of the door with about one inch more to the inside, then unroll very easy (don't stretch) enough to cover the length of the door. Hold the roll with your left hand and slowly lay it down on the door, using you right hand as a guide.

You can get much straighter lines with more tape unrolled. Give it another try, use the damaged roll as practice.

As far as the magnetic stripe goes, if you can lay it on straight, you lay the tape straight.

We have a fella around here that stripes dealer cars-he wipes the tape area up one side & down the other using a towel, grabs a roll of tape, puts it on the front fender & literally walks back to the rear of the car & lays it donw, walks back using another towel to smooth the tape down & razor blades the door edges, repeat on other side & on to the next car-I bet he spends a minute/minute & half on Jap cars, big Ford trucks/vans took him much longer. I think the key is not getting too picky, just pull it snug(don't stretch tho) & it will lay down straight on its own.
