on my 51 half ton i noticed what looks like a large standard screw driver slot can that tighten any play on the ball

Yes, that is called an end plug ("screw plug in figure 5).

Have you adjusted them as described on that page - left column, under "1/2 ton and 3/4 ton, except Forward Control"
Installation, step 4.

That chapter has some confusing sections. If those end-plug fittings are loose (and/or extremely warn) that will affect steering and tracking.

You will need to disassemble the ends, clean them thoroughly, and inspect the parts for any wear including the ball ends. If they are usable, make sure that you have a way of tightening the threaded ends very tightly until the springs bottom out, then back off until you can put the cotter pin one of the holes.

im looking for ways to take some of the play out of the front end now that i have some insight i will pull the front tires and see if i can find the sorce of the play thanks to all
