I bought a 58 Chevy with a 350 SBC actually built and represented to me as a 383. I replaced the intake gasket for leak and rebuilt 4 barrel etlebrock carb, got her running but when I went to set timing ,,,,no timing tab indicator. Ugg I looked on line and found that there are more options than I can weed though. I'd like ro just put on an OEE tab indicator. What do you engine guys say? What do I need? It has a EI distributor. Does the original bolt on engine Block off to drivers side ( two bolt holes there ) or timing cover bolts. Thanks for any help. Here's how to find top dead center: https://www.speedwaymotors.com/the-toolbox/locating-top-dead-center/28657The tool for doing that is easily made from a spark plug with the porcelain removed and the plug threaded for a bolt that will contact the top of #1 piston as you gently rotate the engine by hand. The marks can be made on a degree wheel, timing tape or the balancer itself. Easy, peasy!

Also 2 different locations for indicator (pointer) on timing cover depending where the line on the damper is in relation to the keyway.

Pete,
It's attached by the screws that hold the timing cover to the front of the block. If you PM me your email address I'll send you a photo of the one on the 350 in my '32 Ford roadster street rod. A lot of street rod builders are into bling and throw away the OEM tabs. I'm sure you can find one for the cost of postage. If I had an extra one I'd send it to you. It's not as though they wear out.
If you get on the Chevy Talk forum it's pretty likely someone would have one for you.
