Anyone have any idea where I can buy a new vent window stud that the handle fits over (kind of a half-moon end on)? Somehow, I've misplaced them and can't seem to find any online. I've got a '51 and have everything to do my rebuild but these studs...thx in advance, Derek
I doubt the pivot or stud is available separately. You'll probably need to find a donor frame for the complete saddle. I replaced a lot of these in the 70's and early 80's when trucks had vent windows and drivers ran the CB Coax through the vent, I can't remember for sure, but I think they may be different between left and right. John
Derek, sometime ago, rather a long time ago, I did see ONE vendor that had them. I have looked at the "regular vendors" and have not found one.....but I haven't given up...yet!
....your best bet, if you have not already did it, is to post an ad in the Parts Wanted Forum for an old vent window that someone has around with a bad glass in it. They are around and can be found.....but it may take a little while. Don't give up!
EDIT: it may be worth a phone call to Jim Carter and ask if he has an old one.
Also, Mongo, who is a member here, may be able to help. I think he has some parts trucks that may have one.
EDIT: #2: I do see the entire vent window frame at Classic Parts.....black with the seal $124 for a Pair.....I think the Chrome was 120 a pair. (if you gotta you gotta) but try the swap meet first!!!
Thx tinnerjohn and Achipmunk, appreciate the comments and advice from both of you!! The other issue I ran into yesterday was how to ensure the stud stays in the frame. I'm guessing it was a tight press-fit when they were originally manufactured (as I don't see any obvious weld on the inside), so I'm wondering now if I'm going to HAVE to go with a new window/frame...thx again!
I will be following this post for any updates. I have the same issue. My driver side was missing the stud when I purchased the vehicle. 54 3100. I purchased a replacement handle thinking it would come with the stud. It did not. Now the new handle is sitting in the glove box waiting for me to come up with a solution or give up and purchase a new window (or find a donor) I have considered trying to make my own but have not tried yet. I hate the idea of replacing the entire window just for that missing stud. Good luck. I hope you come up with a solution.
I broke mine off on the passenger side taking out the old glass. Vent handle was rusted up real bad and would not turn. So I made it turn, and of course, the stud broke off. I think it's 5/16" in diameter, and with a Dremel tool and cut-ff wheel, it can be made. Use the driver side as the pattern. I welded it in on the channel side, and very carefully ground down my weld almost flush. The vent glass doesn't fit tight, you have a little tolerance inside the channel, so it doesn't have to be ground down flush. The exposed end (that won't be exposed when you install the handle) is cut down to a 'D' shape, but be very careful and take your time cutting the notch for the roll pin. What I did worked for me.
The angle is the photo is misleading. It is not a Fillister Head. One side is about 50% shorter. It is hard to see that in the view looking straight on. The part in the middle that looks like the slot for a screw head is the flat side of the D part sticking up farther than the reverse D part.
