My 10 year old son and I are in the process of bodywork on our 69 GMC 1 ton dually. We have removed the rocker panels and want to clean up the inner panels and was wondering if after getting them cleaned if we should brush on some POR? It may be a while before we are ready to put the new rockers on and was wondering if you can weld to the POR? Also there are many suppliers that have rockers for this year of truck, most seem to be in the high teens for price. Is there a difference in quality between suppliers? Thanks

You can not weld over POR-15. The surface will have to be cleaned of all coatings, down to bare metal, in order to achieve a good, full-penetration weld. Good luck with your project.

Some suppliers sell "weld through primer". Eastwood has a couple different versions. For long term protection, I'd use the high zinc one.

That's what I'd do... but when it comes time to weld you'll just have to sand/grind off the POR-15. It will also burn off as you weld. Then just re-apply over the top of the weld.

POR-15 on every body surface that doesn't get paint is a good rule of thumb.
