Shortly after purchasing my 53 I also purchased a 59 Chevy 261 engine pulled from a 59 Chevy Viking. The engine was locked but I have since taken it apart, cleaned it up installed new rings and am in process of reassembly. My original plan was to put the 261 into the 53 but when cleaned out the gas tank on the 53, installed new fuel pump, points and plugs the old 53 fired right up and has been running fine. I had the same "problem" with the 283 in my truck. It ran pretty well when I got it, so I put it into the truck to get it set up and running. I figured I'd drop in my rebuilt 327 when the 283 died. It never died, and now resides in Germany.
