I just found out about a local fella that will come to my house with his diesel compressor and will sand blast my frame. He does very good work and I think I'll take him up on it. The plan is to POR15 or Zero Rust right afterwards. Question is, with my frame (161" wheelbase), how much should I get to cover the frame? Because it is a dump bed, I was planning to clear coat it as well for UV protection. Do ya think a gallon of primer and a gallon of clear coat will be enough?

I think you need to re-think the clear coat, I believe it needs a pigment paint but others will be here shorty with the low down.

OK...I was unaware of the POR15 Chassis Coat Black. From what I gathered from POR15 website, if I were to clean the frame...apply POR15 rust preventive coating...then apply the Chassis Coat Black, there should be no need for Clear Coat. Is this correct?

Again, not sure yet how much to get for my frame. I can talk the POR15 guys and will prolly reccommend an amount that I should need. Just curious if anyone has done a 2-ton frame before.

my friend just put two coats on a 1/2 ton 68 frame and had some left. Soooo..........OH..he only bought a quart.

Beware of the noise and mess this guy will make. If you have neighbors close by you might want to warn them. Make sure he puts up barriers to contain the sand or it will look like the beach around your house.

BIG CHEVY 3600-That shouldn't be a problem. My neighbors are actually perty cool. They make their own share of high decibal levels with their karaoke parties. I have dozens of used billboards (20' x 40')that I use to cover firewood. Was planning to put them down for cover.

Achipmunk-Good to hear from ya again! Do ya think a gallon of each would be overkill for me? I never used POR15 and not to sure how it covers. I've only ever used Zero Rust rattle cans so far.

mummdogg: I agree with robin58. Unless there is a price break on a gallon I would not buy that much. My friends 68 heavy duty frame ain't exactly small, even for a 1/2 ton, and he has some of his quart left over after two coats. I think 2 quarts would be a gosh awful plenty. Keep us posted Ron and let us know how it comes out. Hopefully I will get my chassi ready in the next couple weeks. Its ready to blast but its been one thing after another. Today it was put struts on the wifes car!! Tomorrow is cruise-in night.

Well mummdogg I am Achimpmunk's friend with the 68 and I covered my whole frame and the two rear control arms (2 coats) with a quart and have about a 6th of the can left. So twice that should be enough. This stuff surprised me and my dad on how far it goes and I love the fact that I put it on with a few paint brushes. WEAR OLD CLOTHES when using it though. And have some mineral spirits close by for a easier clean up if it gets on your skin.

Thanks fellers...You certainly answered my questions. I'll go with 2 qt's of rust preventive and 2 qt's of classic coat black. The way it sounds, I'll have some left over but that's OK, there's other places I can use it.

Since I'm still learning about this, is the rust preventative a spray on or brush on? Is that the Zero Rust brand that was mentioned previously? Thanks.

there are all forms of rust preventers Allan, some of which are intended as primers, some can ne used for top coat paint - Zero Rust is a great one that can be brushed or sprayed and can be obtained in rattle cans - mostly used as a primer, but can be a top coat or be clear coated
