So, I thought that I would let you guys know that as I close in on swapping out the engine in my truck, I drained the oil and found antifreeze in it but did not see any metal. The green color was very obvious. I think I will pull the head tomorrow to see what I can see from the top. I will drop the oil pan after I get the boat anchor out. I will send updates in the near future!

Anyone feel like lending a hand putting the new one in? I should be ready by next weekend.

I am itching to actually drive her again!

May not see a lot from the top.
Pulling the oil pan might tell more of the story than pulling the head.

I figured that would be the case; should be interesting to see what was the actual cause.

I am waiting on the parts I ordered. I was told that ups lost the package of gaskets. If I can find a few hours, I will pull the old engine this weekend after I paint the wife's office. Otherwise, I am ready for the flip of engines. Once she is on the lift, I will know more.

Chris - If this gives you some inspiration - here is your engine running up at my shop in Philadelphia:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxQYi0-vLIwJSS0zWFY5dXg3TTQ/view?usp=sharing

DJ and his dad were here for the "first start". This was plugs in, distributor attached and power on. We never dialed it in, but she ran great and no smoke !!!!!

Best, Amtrak Joe

That's the one Chris - except we put a rebuilt head on it since then. The original head had a chip where the spark plug seats on the head - no. 2 cylinder. Bill had a newly rebuilt 216 head and that is whats on there.

That is a great engine that deserves to be painted the traditional grey. -----------------------That is just one opinion.

The TRUTH: Chuck Connors obtained permission from Napco Man to work on the tv show 'The Rifleman', in addition, Chuck Norris calls our own NAPCO MAN, 'Sir!' There's only about 8 hours of daylight left, just sayin'.

FYI, engine was painted gray a week ago, not traditional though. Anyone available for assistance putting her into her new home on Saturday ? I am willing to supply smoked meat and beer to anyone available. Any takers?

Chris, sounds like you are making forward progress again. Good for you. Smoked meat, beer and wrenching on an old truck? Thats a very tempting offer. Unfortunately I will be sequestered to the home base again this weekend taking care of the wife's hay burners while she is away. So I am out.
Good luck on the install, hope all goes well.

If I were only closer. But we’d be throwing in either a GMC 270 or a GMC 302. None of this Chebby nonsense....time for a overdrive transmission too. Just sayin’

Chris - good luck with the installation. I will place my wrench in my pocket for good luck. Lets hope that no bolts get stripped, no fingers get pinched, and she fires up strong. Joe

Chris,
Glad to hear things are moving ahead. But I am still in the same boat I was in for Winchester -- My duties here preclude any travel at this time. Sorry! However, I do plan on wearing your hat in the Veteran's Day Parade while at the wheel of the M-37B1-WW smile

Update: I have a few buddies from work that will be attending. My ODSS wrench will be in my pocket in hopes that the wisdom of all of you enters my head. Afterwards I will be drinking a beer or 4. I will give you all an update after everything is together.

Old engine is out, new engine has bellhousing, flywheel, clutch and transmission installed. Just need a few new bolts and some assistance with the valve adjustment (I screwed it up) after I put it in.

Chris
If you need help with the valve adjustment. I have a lot of free time (broken hand from a car accident ). I cant do anything hands on, but can stupervise. I just adjusted the valves on a 46 its a easy job , just have to make sure the engine is turned to the right spot first.

Let me know,
Richard

Chris - make your way to NAPA - get yourself a mechanical fuel pump for this engine. I recall it has a good camshaft and a mechanical pump should work - Joe

Joe,

Mechanical fuel pump is already on it. Just need to rerun lines and take off the old electric pump. Step by step, I am getting there slowly. I will be on the road again!

Richard,
Sorry to hear about the hand! Hope you recover very soon. I may take you up on the assistance. I need to learn and I enjoy doing the work. I am TDY until 4 nov.

Thanks guys!

No need to print the tech tip on the 3:55 gear install your neighbor SWEET is the resident expert on this install and I'm certain you get the parts and some beer lined up he'll be right over to make it happen.

Just make sure your brake system is up to par to handle the extra speed, and if your looking to upgrade to a dual master brake system I know that's on the Radar of Sweet also as I braced up and has his bracket welded up extra strong a few years back....

nd,

Congrats on your progress! You are a couple of months ahead of me. I'm hoping to do my engine swap in the spring. I'd love to hear your lessons learned from your current swap. Any hints or tips to make it easier and safer would be greatly appreciated! OBTW, I'm a total noob here, so nothing is too basic for me.

Thanks!

Mike,
I would love to assist. It was easier than I thought it would be. Sweet lives close to you also. There are many guys on here that would love to assist. They will teach you just like they are teaching me! I am a beginner and have learned a ton in the last 4 years.

PM me and I will send my cell number to you.

Chris

Chris,

Your offer sounds awesome! Your truck looks great, mine is going the ratty route for the time being. Your offer to help is the motivation that I need to get out in the garage in the cold and get done the engine work that needs to be done so that I'm ready for the swap. Once I get the engine work done, I'll see if I can get you and those teachers to help me through the process.

The biggest unknowns for me right now are dealing with the torque tube so that it doesn't crush me... and knowing that I'll have to drill out the front motor mount holes (the engine is from a passenger car and used side mounts), probably after setting the engine in place. Lots to think about on cold winter days!
