Excellent reference Pablo. Thanks for posting.

Do you guys think 3.73 gears would be going to far with an SM420 and a 235? Only casual driving, no work in her future. I assume I can find those for the 14 bolt.

If your in the flat part of Texas I think they're a good first choice and given you don't expect to haul a lot.

Around here in the mountains 4:10 is a good choice with the original or similar engine. Sometimes on the highway unloaded a little faster gear would work.

I' m willing to guess that 90 percent of the dually or C&C were 4.10 ratios. 3.73 seems more common in the Single wheel trucks. There is also a 3.42 ratio that seems to be more common in the late model trucks. There is also a 3.21 gear set out there, but you'll only find it used.

Be aware of the 4.56 rearends though, the internals are an entirely different animal.

You can use dually hubs on the 67" axles to make them 63". You can also use the Easton hubs with different bearings to make a 64.5" axle. Either way, you have to get creative with the brakes. Luckily, the van rearends have drums that are more shallow.

In my experience most of the C&C axles are 4.56. It took me a lot of searching locally to find one with 3.73 gears

I did find one or two suburban or pickup truck axles with 3.73. suppose that would have worked with hub swap and some fabrication or aftermarket parts for brakes as noted.

Thanks Fellas. As I told Matt in a PM, I still need to check the status of the drums on my 48 (the 52 donor drums are toast) to see if I'll have to move to the 14 bolt, but if I do, I'll have my RE guy find one with a 3.73.

Don't forget, GM ff 14 bolt axles are typically $150. in most places, if you are willing to do a little searching.

Any Info on Gears would be Very Cool , as 40Mph - 50Mph
Isn't getting it done ..

I Mean it's Cool for Cruising slowly around and stuff
I hauled 2800 lbs the other Day .

Pushing the Temp's up 220 in 1 spot on a long Hill ..
Since then I Installed - Roller Tips & Alu. Valve Covers
with Better Breathers . Running Cooler ..
Also New Wires & Plugs - seemed to - Cool Motor - I don't have to Push on throttle so much ..New Wires were 4 time better then Old ones and Denso Plugs 3 Times Better then Old Plugs

ps: I have seems New Drums Brakes $168.00 Pc.
Expensive but those Things Huge - Last a Life Time !

Ton of fun, I like alot of others here replaced my pumkin with one from a 70 chevy, 4:10 ratio. Does wonders, I an able to keep up with traffic with no problems.

Yes I do still haul with it and it still has plenty of power with those gears. It's a easy swap, did mine alone in about 6 hours, played withe the grandkids some during that time too. The hardest part is finding a doner.

Sixteen years ago I paid Randy's Ring&Pinion (on Hwy.99 up your way) to do exactly this procedure. They mentioned in 2001 "good" donors were getting scarce.

Ok so if I tell my RE guy to search for a center section from a
" 1968-1972 3/4-ton GM truck with the automatic transmission" he's going to charge me for it regardless if it fits or not. It sounds like a pretty sure thing. I just don't have the time right now to go hunting.

Bottom line is that one of our own 'Bolters will set up the swap for you with a dirt track guy looking for our third members and send you back one with the 4.11 gearing. Many of us have done it and it's really a sweet/easy deal where everyone wins.

One of the reasons those ratios are so scarce is that a bunch of us 1/4 mile dirt trackers scavenged up every 4.11 we could find back in the late 1970's. We would run a 4.56 on some tracks, and the 4.11 on slightly longer ones, both running against a 1.88 ratio 2nd. gear in a Muncie 4 speed. The difference was the way the "1/4 mile" was measured. On the tracks that were measured around the outside wall, we needed the 4.56, but if the distance was measured around the infield the 4.11 kept the engine from running out of breath down the straightaway. The idea was to leave the turns at about 3,000-3,200 RPM, and hit 7K before chopping the throttle to make the next turn.

I have 5:14's for Swap - seems there are a lot of Hill Climbers use this Gear .. Off Road etc.

I just cruise the back roads would like to cruise 55 more
Comfortable . .

Also what's Up with the 19.5 inch Wheels - Hub Bore 4.625 , 8 Lug - I have seen a few 2 Ton Vehicles with them and only 1 or 2 two 3800's which to be Split Rims .
Dually set up 3800 1 Ton ..

My 56 GMC 250 is a 1.5 ton dually with 19.5's, but not a lock ring rim. I acquired another set from a scrap truck so I'll be able to mount up a set of snow diggies for the winter. I found an old Dodge step van locally with 19.5 singles. I'm yearning to put them on my 69 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4

Larger Tires are More Expensive , Rims & Tire are very Heavy for the Suspension to Control ..

( It looks like Axles are Larger on H072
1 Ton Eaton vs the H052
)

So concerned with the Spines on 1 Ton Axle Fitting the Into the Third Member or Carrier assembly .. ?

Got lost on Responses - sorry .

Again Thanks Much - I have written a few Suppliers , but they either don't get back or don't answer question in Complete Sentences , as Condition of Item for Sale ..

Lets See ( Imagine I have been selling Truck Parts for 20 yrs. ) most these Yards selling for 50 yrs. Haa - They don't have the Foggiest Idea , Yeah Right !

So it's starting to look like I'll have to Go and Pull the Parts
Inspect the Parts and Leave all the Left Overs in the Yard ..

Last Time I got Parts from a Yard 24 yrs. ago - Guy Cut it with a Torch - Hacked Crap out of it . ( He wanted a Tip ) also . LOL

Or they wish to sell You the Entire Worn Out Drums and all Axle ans All - their just to Dam Lazy to put the Pumpkin on the Counter . . ( Who needs the Extra 120 Lbs ) My Drum are A-OK
and Bearing Also . .

I see what Looks to be same 19.5 Wheels and Offset etc. , but are only 5 Lug ?[i][/i]
