Well I just picked up a 1949 3800 that I love. Not something I was looking for but something I am super excited about - it is a very worn driver with great patina (read - needs lots of TLC but it runs). My plans are to just sort it to over time and enjoy it for what it is. No restoration plans.

My first project is to install the back glass this weekend - I read the shop manual and have done some reading online. I got a seal kit from Jim Carter. The one thing I am a little confused on is - the seal I got is not a closed loop. Where around the window is it best to butt the ends of the loop together? Should they be sealed in some way? The article in the tech tips mentions 3m mastic. The bead is the same - does it matter where the ends butt together?

Thanks for the help :-) I'll get some pics up soon

First welcome to the Stovebolt and congrats on your "new" truck. It will bring you hours of frustration but years of enjoyment.

Questions such as what you ask should be posted in the garage forums as that is where all the "tech" stuff goes on. Not much happens here in the Welcome center.

However, I think most agree to join the gasket in the middle bottom and I usually put a dab of the 3M or other caulking in the joint.....if needed. A word to the wise here is don't cut it to short. Allow a little "extra", say a quarter of inch as the gaskets always seem to shorten once the glass is wedged in and all in place...or at least that has been my experience. Other wise you will likely end up with a gap between bigger than you'd think.
Use some lubricant like windex, or dawn dish detergent ect to help getting it set in place.

Good luck...and post us up a picture when you can.

Also, as a new member your post are "moderated" for the first 4 or 5 post. After that you can send PM's...or private messages, and enjoy all Stovebolt has to offer. Good luck.

Welcome JP. I assume it's a pickup and not a Suburban, always best to tell people exactly what you have. There is a forum on body issues, ask there for best results. I would do what Achipmunk suggested, keep the joint centered and at the bottom.

JP, now that is a nice find. Even though there may be some "issue's" hiding somewhere your truck looks in unusually great shape for its vintage. Thanks for sharing.

That's a nice looking truck. I've always liked the look of a 3800 with that long box.

It may be too late to mention this, but it might help someone else out with their back glass. I cut my gasket over an inch too long. It's real easy to squeeze that extra inch in there and helps prevent leaks later. I also put the splice in the gasket at the top of the window, and the splice in the lock strip at the bottom. That way you don't have both splices at the same location and the splice isn't as obvious.

Correct,I always put the joins opposite too and I also prefer to put the gasket join at the top,it's less likely to leak imo.
