For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 592 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 592 | I've been collecting parts for a 1957 GMC 250 panel project. The gas tank on the truck needs to be replaced.
Any thoughts on where to find a replacement gas tank and sending unit?
Thanks,

You might try a universal/adjustable one, http://www.americanclassic.com/ has some that may work. They only fit in one way and are a pain to get exactly right. As far as the tank, I have not seen direct replacements but, I did not look very hard as mine was fine. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 385 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2002 Posts: 385 | I've been shopping for a new tank as well, so if you find a source for your TF panel post it here, they may have AD underfloor tanks. I've gone to several shops and asked what other years/models/makes will fit, nobody has a clue. Apparently, you can't just give the dimensions, capacity, and porting requirements to find a similar tank. Not sure why this is, probably has to do with Google replacing the pre-frontal cortex of today's mechanic. Short of having my tank purged and welded the most cost-effective option I've run across are plastic marine-application fuel tanks and fabricating my own straps. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 6 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 6 | I scoured the internet for over a year, never did find a suitable replacement. Wound up having my tank split, loose baffle welded back in place, dents pounded out, and the inside epoxy coated for @ $500. Worth every penny of it. It's original, will outlast me, and I didn't have to play around with fitting a different tank. I found a suburban/panel sending unit at Jim's.

The guy doesnt do contoured corners, just normal bends,so I compensated by gradually lengthening/bending (in a staircase step fashion) to get around the curved frame support members. His quote was just about what a universal would cost. Then I added an additional 6 inches on front and rear to make up for the loss. But it will still be just a few gallons more than the stock 10 gallon tank. Also gonna add a 3/8 return nipple for a wix regulated filter. Sorry Matt, didn't realize you were the OP... I dont know how any sending unit is gonna give me an acurate reading, but the OEM guage cant be trusted anyway..drive/refill...repeat
