While replacing my front brake shoes on my 58 I had one of the balls fall out of my front outer bearing. I thought no big deal until I got to the parts counter. Finally advance auto ordered one for me and when it arrived it had a plastic carrier for the balls to ride inside. The bearing was a B 67. Has anyone used this type of bearing and had long lasting results. I'm not at ease with it yet. Can the torque be the same 30 ft. pounds as the all metal bearings? It's in and I moved the truck around the yard but have not road tested it yet.

All the plastic does is keep the balls spaced evenly- - - -it carries no load. As long as the bearing is packed and torqued properly, it doesn't matter what material the spacer is, and the assembly and torque procedures should be identical. I've used that type of bearing often with no issues.

6571, I know the ball bearings have worked just fine for many years and still can...however, we're getting gouged on price because they are they are old.
The inside bearing on my 52 panel was $53.I bought a complete set with seals to switch my panel to rollers for $100 bucks. I believe the same kit works up to 1959. Advance Auto gets them from Rare Parts and you pay the premium. Check around. If you want to change them all I can round up the part number for the complete set.

Hey Alvin, is converting to roller bearings just a matter of changing out the races, bearings, and seals?

I only changed the drivers side outer. Send me the part numbers, the next time I have the hubs off I will change mine over to roller.

Carl, yes.

6571: I always switch to tapered rollers. The kit 47-59 includes inner and outer tapered roller bearings, race (also called cup and cone) and seals for less than $100. Albeit 58 is a lucky year because the stock ball bearings and seals seem to be cheaper than pre 58...but not cheaper than the kit.
Just one vendor example
I have also used a different kit made for disc conversion.
The above kit is supplied to Speedway, and many other vendors, by CPP. The price is fixed.
There seems to be several sizes/designs for 58 1/2T front bearings? Don't know why but double check ID's and OD's of kit bearings to your bearings.

6571, I checked and I got mine from the Truck Shop in Concord, N.C.
The kit number is 47-09216 for $99.

If you look close the individual bearings have two prices. One price is domestic and the other is "import". At least they tell you up front!

The link Bart posted to Speedway the kit was $95. Check shipping cost!

52Carl.... they are suppose to be an exact fit but over the past few years, and from a post I recently made here, it seems that "some" have had to "sand/polish" the spindles a little but it apparently is not a big deal. Maybe someone got a set of bearing that were close to the "no-go" gauge but still passed the QC check. Unfortunately I have not changed mine but they are laying on my work bench as the next project!

Alvin and Bart thanks for the info. I paid $47.00 for the one wheel outer with tax. I will order one of these kits and place it on the shelf . Just installed new shoes on front. Next change or wheel packing mine will be changed.

I got the complete tapered roller set, from CPP 3 years ago for my 55 2nd. They fit and work perfectly. I think they were $78 back then.
