Called for vin inspection, they ran engine #'s, and vin on title, they also ran previous title that was in So. Dak. When it did not show any irregularities the truck was signed off. I got aftermarket tag stamped my own numbers with Harbor frt. stamp kit. I am going to use orig. type rivits, ask the inspector about new plate install, was told it was OK to replace tag. The right way. | | | | Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2008 Posts: 465 | So the registry responded with a stock answer about issuing a replacement Vin number To replace a VIN # you would need to apply for a MA Assigned VIN#, please use the following link for more detailed information.
Applying for a Massachusetts-Assigned Vehicle Identification Number
Massachusetts-Assigned Vehicle Identification Numbers are assigned and affixed to the vehicle by the State Police at any Massachusetts salvage inspection site by appointment only. The State Police will inspect the vehicle to ensure the vehicle and any parts used to restore the vehicle are not stolen and whether the vehicle is eligible for a Massachusetts-Assigned Vehicle Identification Number.
guess I better leave original on truck

Well, that sucks. I'm wondering how they're going to tell you didn't steal a fender for instance? That's kind of like asking someone "Are you still beating your wife?" You MIGHT find a sympathetic State Police officer (maybe a fellow stovebolter) who'd let you swap out the plate in front of him. The fact of the matter is who's going around checking VIN's after you get a vehicle registered? If you already have a title and don't need to mess with the authorities, I'd just swap it out and keep the original in the glovebox.

good pictures though | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 7,442 Bolter | Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 7,442 | Well j-a-h, you opened the door with your header. Hundreds of threads on this topic and they all discuss the very same thing (Break the law or don't break the law). Apparently your request for measurement took a back seat to the same ole stuff. If I had an original truck to measure for you I would.

good pictures though LOL My truck cab is at a buddy's a few miles away from me. Next time I go for a visit, I'll see if I can remember to take some measurements for you. (But don't hold your breath - There are three things that happen when you get old. The first is you lose your memory and I don't remember the other two. )

As bartamos said, swap them after you get the registration done. The dog in the Turkey suit had me rolling on the floor. That's a classic.
