I have some 1/2" thick felt (organ servicemans gift) and decided try a 'looser' mix. Wet the felt with MMM then worked 00' grease (steering box) into it, filled the cup 1/2 way added the wick then filled the rest of the void with 00.
My thinking is that it will flow better and not harden. Any reasons other than possible increased maintenance to not try it?

That would make a more solid grease move which is what I was looking for...guess I'll do a little more retrofitting tomorrow I have springs and disk makeing material.

Part no places it as a 1952 270's unit. SG (steering gear) grease (No. 0 grade, self-levelling grease) was used in the steering box (at the factory, and preferably when checking lubricant/grease level). | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,377 Ex Hall Monitor | | Ex Hall Monitor Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 6,377 | I had to use chassis grease in my '38 because bearing grease wasn't viscus enough. When I'd tighten the cup the grease would squeeze out around the threads. It's possible that I was just too heavy handed with turning the cup but it sure didn't seem like I was turning it too hard. The next time I reload I might do a "custom" mix of chassis & bearing grease.
